Default Newbie Help - 2006 Volvo S60 2.5T exhaust repair/replace (Mechanic or DIY?)

I have a beautiful Blue 2006 Volvo S60 2.5T that has run 106,000 miles. I recently touched the curb while getting out of a parking lot exit and the tip of the exhaust that extends a lil out near the rear of the car (I believe it is called the muffler, excuse my technical knowledge on cars) fell off. It was rusted.

I decided to take the car to a mechanic to get it fixed. He said it needs to be replace as it cannot be welded back or fixed from a future inspection standpoint. I agree, since I want my car in the best of shape.
He called me up today to tell me the exhaust replacement costs $1100. Although I know little about cars, I am aware that the entire exhaust system does not overhauling or replacement.
I think this maybe more than required or I am being overcharged.
Your valuable comments and help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds high. The exhaust tip, which is what fell off, comes as part of the muffler, which is under the car. The muffler needs to be cut off to be replaced separate from the rest of the exhaust system.

Thank you for the quick reply. I would post a pic of the exhaust to be more clearer. But I do not know how to do that.
