A couple of months back, my wife and I bought a 2015 S60 with about 49K miles on it. We love the car, but myself being sort of a back yard mechanic, noticed from the start that the engine seemed to make more than its share of noise. We bought an extended warranty with the S60 in the case of any problems over the next few years. Having never owned a Volvo, I was not sure if this was just normal valvetrain noise as it ran great.

The noise is not deep in the engine, but rather shallow, like excessive clearances. It speeds up with engine RPM and disappears with full throttle.

Are these engines just noisy like that? Or could there be a problem?
