Not able to program a key for a 2001 Volvo S60 because it will crash the computer
Hi Volvo Enthusiasts. I bought a spare key for my 2001 S60 from a Volvo dealership about a year ago and left the car with them so that they could program the key. I got a call a few hours later telling me that they were unable to program the key because it was starting to crash the car's computer. (9/24/22 I'm going to call the and get more clarification on what was actually happening.) They informed me that if the computer crashed, it's not replaceable and the car would no longer be able to run. Has anyone heard of this before? It sounds so crazy to me. Is the car just so old that the onboard computer isn't available to replace? Does anyone sell these? Do I have any options?
I'm constantly worried about losing my one key and losing my precious car. Overall, it's in great shape and only has about 120,000 miles. I'd appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
ShayBaby

So they called to tell you that it *crashed* the cars computer, then tell you if it does crash (which it already did) you car wouldn't work? From your description something isn't adding up.
You can get replacement computers (ECU) from a site like xemodex which a variety of different options. You can send yours to them, or buy a reman'd one from them that is fresh and will require a software transfer at the dealer.
I forget which module is related to programming the key in the 2001 S60. If you can confirm with your dealer which module is "Crashing" or wait for a veteran to reply here and provide more information for you.
I have personally used xemodex before for the CEM in my 06 s60 and it was great service and results at a more than fair price.
