Default Extra Key?

Can Volvo keys be copied? I just bought a 2001 V70 and it only came with one key. Also, how do you tell the difference between the "master" key and the "valet" key? Are there any differences between the two?

Thanks!

KWB131, volvo keys cannot be copied. You have to go to the dealer to purchase one and have the software downloaded into the key. The key could run between 75-110 bucks. also my dealership charges 30.00 for the software, and 1 hour of labor to download the software....you're looking at about 220 bucks for one key!!

no that doesn't include the price for the remote. the remote, and the software for the remote are seperate charges...but you should only pay one labor price (1 hour)

The valet key will not open either the trunk nor the glove box.

yeah that's the whole point of the valet key!! it should only unlock the car and start it so some stupid teenager parking your car at a fancy restaurant doesn't go through your car looking for something

Instead paying dealer $300 for a remote and programming, can I just go to the local Car Alarm installer to put in a basic alarm system that cost under $150 installed with 2 remotes? Will it work or cause any problem?

I wouldnt get an alarm on the vehicle. I tried to get one installed, but the owner of the shop told me to stay away from aftermarket alarms on these vehicles. the electronics are interconnected and the likeliness of getting a fault somewhere are very high. Also for them to override the OEM security they need additional parts which runs up the price. I would get the remote from the dealer, you need an alarm on these vehicles they cant be started and stolen because of the immobilizers, only thing is that they can break in and steal your wallet and cell phone, if you leave them inside. hope its any help
