Oil Change on S60?
Just got back from a 3000 mile road trip after owning the car 3 months and am about to do my first change since buying my 2006 S60 2.5T. Any recommendations on either synthetic or reg and brands? The cap says Castrol. I'm sure Volvo gets paid for that.
Also, how bout oil filter brands? Napa Gold has been true to me with the wife's Acura.
The car was incredible on the road BTW. Lots of mountain passes for fun....

Sounds awesome. I have yet to take mine out for any serious long hauls - nothing more than a few hundred miles at a time.
I'm sure you'll hear from plenty of owners on this subject. I like synthetic, 10W30 or 5W30. My last oil change I picked up the Castrol Edge with Titanium Technology (not to be confused with Castrol Edge with Syntec Technology). It's guaranteed for a year of protection. I bought it last time Advance offered it as an oil change special.
If you're getting your stuff locally, Napa Gold should be fine. I'm sure people will tell you to get OEM, which is Mahle if you buy it online - and that's what I do.
The filter housing is an oddball size, I found most local places don't carry the filter wrench size so I bought mine online. I don't have experience with the strap type wrenches.
One thing I would recommend is bringing the car to the Volvo dealer once in a while for an oil change. They now offer free software updates when you have a service done, which can save you $120 or more each time. So that's a pretty cool deal. I'll probably do that during the winter when it's too cold to change the oil myself.

here in texas i get fully synthetic castrol 10W30
its hot here so the 10 over the 5 is better for the car but not so much on the gas (it only drops by about .3 mpg so its well worth it) castrol because the cap says so (dont care if they get payed for it just wanna do what they test the cars with so i ensure everything is to par)
also with any turbo FULLY SYNTHETIC is always best
the turbos in these cars are cooled from the radiator and oil but syn. dosent gum up like conv. does

If you have never changed the oil on the Volvo there are two things you need to know.
You have to remove the lower air dam which is held on with 5-6 bolts.
You need a special oil filter removal tool to take off the filter. I couldn't find one at any of the auto part stores after spending two days looking and trying various tools. I finally saw a Mac Tool dealer and stopped to see if he had it and he did. It was part of a kit, however he sold me the one I need for about $5.
FYI you might want to change the cabin air filter (CAF) as well, depending on your mileage and environmental exposure is. It is located just under the glove box.

Thanks for all the replys! I ended up going with Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5W/30 ($40) with a dealer oem filter ($11). I had to buy an 86mm V410 oil filter wrench for 12 bucks on amazon.com but it fit perfect! Found out that the dealer I bought it from used a made in china filter. Replaced the air filter with a Mann too. Going to do the cabin filter next.
IPD also has an awesome heavy duty wrench for the oil filter cap. It can get a bit farther onto the filter cap than normal ones to have a sure grip.
Since I plan on keeping my S60 for a long time, I got my filters from ebay. I got a 10-pack of Mahle filter cartridges for under $50 (they come with o-rings for the filter cap). Similar deals are found on Amazon as well for Mahl or Mann filters.
Then, from iPd, I bought 10 crush washers for the drain plug as well as a spare oil filter cap.
I swap filter caps when I change the filter. I clean the spare cap between oil changes and queue it up with a new filter and o-ring, then seal it in a ziplock bag until the next oil change. That way I can do the job quickly and neatly and can thoroughly drain and dry the extra filter cap at leisure.

As the first reply said, 10w30 or 5w30 full sythnethic. i dont prefer real low viscosity because its too thin in my opinion so i stick with 10w30. i use to run castrol but ive recently gone to mobile 1 extended performance full synthetic. Good filters are, Bosch, Fram, Napa Gold, Mobil 1, K&N.
