Default oil smell

Good afternoon all. Quick question about the EGR/flame trap is there an easyway to test it while it is on the carto see if it is functioning properly? the car is an 02 NA w/165000mi. I was working a 50 mile drive and the other day I had the window down and could smell oil like the old 60/70's cars with a bad PVC valve. The car has not used any oil in the 3500 miles I've had it . The intake manifold gasket looks new as do the hoses from the valve cover area down to the trap but the trap doesn't and the clamps are the squeeze type. There is no oil under the upper plastic in the plug area but if I open the fill cap or pull the dip stick I do not have any vacuum. So oil smoke/oil film is pushed out. Again it may be normal with 165000 on the od. Thanks again for any input.

Not really a good way to test. Although check under the intake on the passenger side there is a bango fitting that screw to the bottom of the intake like right behind the power steering pump. There is a small hose that comes off see if it broke.

Ok Tech, I'll take a look at that today. Now that I have the brakes on the truck fixed maybe I'll pull the intake and take every thing apart.
