P0016 error
Newbie to Volvo Forums. So, I had to have my crank shaft seal and cam shaft seals replaced due to a massive oil leak along with my timing belt, water pump and tensioners. Not being comfortable doing it myself I took it to a mechanic. Car is running great like normal, but my check engine light came on. And I took it by Advanced auto to have it scanned. The error that came back was crankshaft position camshaft position correlation. My first thought was this is related to the work I had done. Took it back to mechanic and he pointed to a sensor on top of the transmission and indicated that it wasn't related to what he had done. I thought this sensor was on the righthand side back of the engine. Am I wrong to assume that this is related to the work that I had done? What causes this code? And does replacing the sensor fix this? Any help, ideas or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks
Your check engine light is on because the timing belt is not installed properly, not because you have a bad sensor. You can have him replace the sensor as long as when the code comes back he will put your old good sensor back in, refund that labor and parts cost, and then put the timing belt on correctly the second time. For what it's worth I've never sold a crank position sensor on a white block car. (1991+) Have sold Thousands on the red block 240,740,940 cars. I did have 2 early white block crank sensors in stock when I sold my business, and they had been in stock for many years - when a tech would say "needs new crank sensor" and it was ordered before I could stop the order. Of course after installation, the code came back so we installed the original sensor and found the real problem (cam timing was off after a belt replacement)
Sorry I used to do this for a living for many years and my techs would sometimes screw up doing timing belt jobs. Usually we would catch the problem before the car left. With the correct scan tools (VIDA can test it) you can test and check whether the VVT is set and operating correctly - but that takes a little more skill than just a timing belt replacement.
Sorry for your troubles.

Thanks for your insight. My problem with this mechanic is that I've already paid him close to $1500 , 8.5 hrs of labor @$125 per hr and I know that the check engine light is on because of what he did. My concern is 2-fold: Is driving the car going to damage it? I've driven it for about 75 miles with no issues and secondly I don't really trust his diagnostic skills. I know that he didn't use any cam locking tool because he said he just made "marks" etc. And everything I researched said that the use of the cam locking tool was a must. I really don't know how to approach this with this guy. Do I have to get another timing belt put on? Will driving it ruin the engine? Thanks again for any insights and opinions. Charlie
If he will not stand behind his work your only choice would be small claims court if you wanted financial compensation. And I think it would be difficult to win a case before the car is fixed correctly because he is the "expert" and you are just the customer. Unfortunately this is the kind of thing that creates a bad stereotype for mechanics. You have one that is possibly partially incompetent but won't admit it. (his diagnosis of a bad engine speed sensor might be correct, I don't know for certain it's not, only a new part installed will tell) You could/should have the timing set correctly (if that's the problem) by another shop (that hopefully knows what they are doing) and use documentation to pursue financial compensation for the money spent getting it done right the second time - but that's a lot of work for a maybe several hundred dollar fix.
The timing belt is fine (i'm trusting that is new) it's just a tooth or so off
It will not ruin the engine.
Sorry for your troubles
