Driving back from the airport at 2:00AM this morning I got the check engine light after a 4 hour delayed flight so I knew things were looking up. I got a P0402 trouble code on the scanner and it is related to an EGR valve. Does anyone know how expensive it would be to replace this? Or is it related to the throttle body issues for the 2001 S60 2.4T? I just replaced the alternator last month at 77k miles and the car is starting to suck me dry.

The EGR system is not real complicated and consists of 3 main components. I don't think either of the parts are real expensive, (< $100) but installation would addto the cost. The emissions system warranty for most cars is generally about 80K miles, so this may be covered under warranty. (Not sure about Volvos?)
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor (DPF). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0402 code means that OBD detected an excessive amount of EGR.
