Performance intake or stock?

Default Performance intake or stock?

I have been doing some research for a cold air intake for my s60r. But a few threads said the stock air box in the s60r is quite good and should just add a k and n filter in the stock box.

Is that true or is a cold air intake much better for spool and power?

The stock air box is really good design. But there can be improvements beyond a K&N filter, which you should also do.

iPd/R Kelly intake will get rid of the negative vacuum in the air box at WOT. If your handy, you can also make your own for cheap with a trip to home depot.
R Model Intake Kit

Snabb, post MAF intake pipe will really help the flow by getting rid of the smaller OEM plastic pipe. You'll see the same pipe through iPd, but they source them from Snabb and then charge $30 more for it.

I have both and would suggest any R owner to do the same.

EDIT:
That being said, I went with a one off B-Line intake looks and better sound from the turbo & CBV. I really don't think it has offered any gains my car other the cosmetic and sound.

not to burst the bubble MAtt, but the first link. go to Lowes and dig through the dryer repair aisle. make your own kit for under $15

second link yea the siliycone hoses look nice, hold up a little better, but again, go to Lowes and make your own. Dryer ducting, and some exhaust tubing with some threaded in pipe fittings might not look the best, but smooths out the intake hose very nicely, and does the same thing.

Look into GREEN filters, run them in all my cars, and they don't screw up your MAF.

The reason I went with Snabb's Post MAF pipe is because it has a fitment built into the lower silicone hose to fit the PTC element that connects to the PCV system. If it was a simple pipe and two fittings for the vacuum hoses, it's be cake, but I don't know of a way to mock that specific fitting up on my own. And it looks really good too. Lol.


Where do you source your Green filters? They don't offer a Volvo application on their site. But either way, they're still oiled filters and would cause the same MAF issues as any other oiled filter, if over oiled.

thumbs up for the snabb intake pipe and the ipd short ram, I have both in my s70 awd and love it. It made a big difference, the turbo spools up much quicker and it has a nice noise to it. I noticed more of a performance change with the snabb pipe, but more of a sound change with the ipd short ram.

Lol. At least you have the basic understanding that were talking about pipes. I kidd.

Are you a "do it yourselfer" if not, just buy the two intakes that I linked in my first post. It'll save you a headache. If you are, then you can build your own "R Kelly/iPd" style intake, and but the post MAF intake from Snabb.

Im new to performance. i dont know what you mean by kelly thing.

Would just buying a cold air intake for it save me some time? and be as good if not better than what i can manually do?

i clicked the link and it looks like i already have that connected to my intake box, it looks just like it same shape and everything from under the grill

There really is no Cold air Intakes for these cars. The tuning demand for Volvo's is very small compared to other Euro or JDM cars. So we really don't get the support that the other makes get as there's only a hand full of companies that focus on the Volvo related market.

The best thing you can do if you want cooler air is to upgrade the worthless twin intercoolers, and run a proper FMIC. The PhMIC is the most popular FMIC and it gives the R's a very noticable gains by eliminating the OEM intercoolers heat soak issues. http://www.phuzzymotorsports.com/ind...od&productId=1
I has one on my car and it's a great intercooler.

The R Kelly/iPd intake (R Kelly is the swedespeed user who created it for the R's, then sold the design to iPd) is essentially a snorkel that gives the air box another source for fresh air. It's primary function is to give the turbo more air to suck in and make it easier as the small opening in the airbox that runs to behind the grill is insufficient. If you already have it, that's great! It should be connected to the underside of the air box and you'll see the open end behind the driver side fog light grill right?

The biggest gain you will have in the intake department will be the Post MAF intake pipe which connects to the MAF right outside the Air Box and attaches to the turbo. It's larger and better design then the OEM Pipe.

There are a couple open air filter intakes that are more of a short ram intake such as the Elevate/iPd AMS but it's very expensive for none if any real gains. I have 1 of 4 B-Line intakes and it looks cool but again, it's expensive for negligible gains.


What are your goals with this car? And do you know if there were any other modifications that were done to it before you bought it?

I though the vehicle was stock, nothing i can notice, all i know is that it does have that rectangle type of snorkel on the intake going to the front of the car.

I am currently having a dispute with the dealership i purchased it from because the traction controll and rwd portion isnt working.

My goal is 350whp. is that asking too much for these engines? or can they hold it good? i say whp because even though factory is 300hp. it may only have 250whp due to drivetrain ect.

GREEN filters you don't have to oil if you don't want to. Just hose them off and use the cleaning soluatian when its time.

as to fitment. measure, look in catalog, and fit one in.

sorry matt my eyes were skipping last night I think I fell asleep for a good 20 minutes watching netflix.

like with all "cold air intakes" the cone filter if you go that route will give you maybe a 2 HP gain at most. droppign in a different stock filter, about the same.

playing with the intake pipe maybe 4 HP ??

all in all you will NOT feel a difference, only hear a difference and will make you think you feel more seat of the pants power.

It can be done but for that kind of power you'll be getting close to needing to upgrading the turbo, 3" turbo back exhaust and tuning. Not a cheap venture with the Volvos...

No worries.
I looked through their filters online and none of them have the little adapters to secure the filter to the airbox. But if they have one that was a little shorter, it should work just fine. I agree, the biggest difference will be in the intake pipe. And the sound factor is pretty sweet too.

That all depends on the air box in question. Like I already said, the P2R air boxes are a very good design and flow really well already. By adding the little snorkel, helps the air box flows as good as any open element filter helping turbo spool as easy as it's going to get. With most intake kits, the best advantage they have is in the pipe not being restrictive or with baffles in it for sound control.
Here's a side by side picture of a 3" intake pipe next to the OEM pipe. Also note the intake pipe is an oval, not round like the 3" pipe.
The OEM pipe is not as large or as free flowing. If you through a filter on that pipe, it still won't flow more then what the pipe is capable of. So in the P2R, the "choke point" is the pipe not the air box.



Have you looked at the air filter in your car yet? If not, here is a K&N filter. Ithe OEM filter looks just the same but is a paper filter with a little foam sock on the bottom of it... You can see it's very capable of high flow rates.

Ok i went in and looked at the filter and its the stock paper. my engine bay looks exactly the same as yours. so the vehicle is infact stock, if i keep my air box open like you have yours will that be better than how it was? and i do plan on getting a k and n filter, just trying to figure out if its better to have the box open or closed, open is more air but its hotter, and closed is less air but colder.

To be fair that's a just a pic I pulled off SS.
I think it's best to leave it sealed but quite a few guys run with the top off for the extra sound you'll get from the turbo and CBV (it's even louder with the under hood blanket removed).

It's up to you. Take it off and try it out if you want. It won't hurt anything. If you run a short ram intake, the best thing you can do is to rip out the POS twin intercooler system and upgrade to a proper Front Mount Intercooler.

For instance, I have a short ram intake, with snorkel intake connected and hood vent right over my filter and a proper FMIC, my air intake temps while cruising at 70MPH will range from 4-8 degrees above the ambient temperatures in 80-85 degree weather.

With the same setup with the OEM twin intercooler in similar conditions, the air intake temps were 25-30 above ambient temps.

Its not sound i care about its performance. so if it would be better to seal it up so be it! the twin intercooler piping seems to be made out of plastic/rubber. seems like a pretty simple boost leak.

Since you said you have the snorkel that goes to your driver side fog light grill, then I would seal the air box. It'll be getting plenty of air. I'd look to getting the intake pipe from Snabb.

What year is your car?

A boost leak? Do you think you have a boost leak?
the plastic and rubber couplers will hold easily past the 15psi of the R's so you won't have a boost leak unless you have a hole in the factory rubber couplers or in one of the charge air pipes.
Pressure isn't going to slip by one of the fittings. If it does get past a coupler and hose clamp, it'll blow the charge pipes off and you'll hear it and it'll probably stall your car.

Do you have a boost gauge in the car?

my vehicle is a 2004 s60-r. it doesnt feel like o m gosh for 300hp is why i think its leakin
