Default play in the top motor mount

I have some play - maybe 1/4 inch max in the top motor mount - I can freely move the motor back and forth. Am I due for a new motor mount or is this normal?

It is a common part to replace actually. Not too hard to do either.

Are you a gators fan? If its torn replace it. They're cheap. They even make a poly aftermarket one that supposedly won't ever tear and is about the same in price.

Yeah - I'm a Gator!
I looked on IPD and they have the mounts. But one thing that concerned me was that there was quite a lot of comment on how the mounts are stiffer and will transmit more vibration particularly at idle and low rpm. I have a little problem with that now anyhow, I don't know if I want to make it worse. Of course I could always put back on the old mounts...

I'm one of those owners of a V70 that had the urethane mount installed by my repair shop.......I hadn't realized the bolt had vibrated off and wasn't even connected anymore until I took it to my new Volvo mechanic. He reinstalled the bolt and nut and advised me that he recommended not to use the non-OEM part because of the vibration. He was right, after I drove it home with the motor mount reconnected, the vibation was terrible. I went to my Volvo Dealer Parts Dept and bought a new bolt (they give 15% discount to volvo Club of America members) and installed it myself. The difference was 100% improvement in less vibration. The S60 and V70 (2001 and new models) have the same engines, transmissions and motor mounts, etc. Just my experience to share with you.

You are referring to the top mount? OK, I'll look into getting the part from the dealer. I hadn't realized that there was a discount for volvo club members. I need to check in to that. 15% can add up pretty quickly!!

Cheers

Yes, I'm referring to the top motor mount.........the Volvo OEM part with the rubber bushing works best for minimizing the vibration. Volvo has improved the design of the current version of the rubber bushing so that it lasts longer than the original ones. I recall the price for the mount at my local Volvo Dealer with the 15% discount was around $65 or so.......but it's up to each Volvo Dealer whether they will give Volvo Club Members a discount or not so you'll need to check with your local Dealer. There are also a few online parts suppliers that have Volvo OEM parts at discount prices, too.

Thanks for the comments. How tight should the mount be in terms of the bolt that goes through it? The bolt isn't tightened right up to the mount - there is some lateral (left to right) play. Should it all be snugged up?
