Default questions about flushing..

I have a 2001 volvo s60 and have had some issues about the tranny. It sometimes hesitates while putting in drive, about 3-5 seconds to shift in gear, all the other gears are fine, just drive is a bit rough. My question is, would a trans flush be a good idea to possibly correct the problem? It is a T5 with 66,000 miles.

Yes at 66k its a must.

Don't go to a shop that uses a "power flush" but rather do it the old fashioned way. Drain, fill, repeat 2 times (at least).

You MUST use Mobile 3309 Trans fluid.

Drain - fill new - drain new - fill new - drain new - fill new

yes it mixes old and new but it gets something like 98% of the old stuff out.

That or use IPD's little tool

Each time approx 30% is left behind

SO the first is 30% of original

Second is 10% of original

Third is 3% of original

Thats why you do it multiple times.

Wrong, you can't selectively drain out just the old fluid. Also between your drain/fill process. You have to start the car and run it. Because if you don't there is a good chance you might just drain out all new fluid. Because don't forget there is always 3 quarts of fluid in the torque converter.

7.1 liters in the transmission drain 3 liters out. still 4.1 liters put 3 liters in that means there is roughly 56% old 44 % new.

then drain out the 44/56 mixture. So from that comes out 3 quarts again. Leaving 1.5 quarts of new fluid and roughly 2.6 liters of old stuff, add 3 quarts new.

drain it again. out comes 1.5 quarts of new fluid mixed with 1.5 quarts of old fluid. leaving 3 quarts of new fluid and 1.1 quarts of old fluid.

fill again you have 6 quarts of new fluid and 1.1 quarts of old fluid.
the percentage of that which has been changed is then around 85%.

But lets take into fact that the new fluid going in is being contaminated by the old fluid and you have more like 70% new fluid.

Also, if you want to be a real jerk about it. The proper transmission flush done by Volvo uses 12-15 quarts to flush it all out. And also at 66k it's not a must, its a must regardless of the amount of miles put on the fluid if it is burnt or has gone bad do to some other circumstances.

My car also does the 3-5 second stall when going into drive (only afer a lot of driving though). That, IMO, is due to the sucky transmission. However, you won't feel the shock of it if your mounts are good. Check the one underneath the car that goes to the sub frame (and the rest of course). It's item D in this image here:

Mine was bad, had play in it.

Incredible incorrect - 66k is too long - they claim that there is life time fluid but that is total garbage. These AW transmissions are garbage in their best form. 45k at most.

But lets take into fact that the new fluid going in is being contaminated by the old fluid and you have more like 70% new fluid.
exactly what i said.

Hey JP, last time I took my car for an oil change at the dealer, they told me that one of the lower trans mounts was shot. I did not change it but after you're suggestion, I made an appointment tomorrow to get it done. Thanks!

super easy to do yourself - buy the full new mount from IPD dont bother messing with the bushings.

That very well may be causing your clunk but you definitely need a flush anyway.

No, I have a 300+hp car sitting here that, oddly i run through an auto AW transmission. I have burnt up tranny fluid in it in 1 week. Tranny fluid doesn't have to do with miles, it has to do with molecular breakdown due to heat. The S60 could benefit from a large trans fluid cooler.

Back to the mounts, The top mount is a pretty famous failure point on the earlier S60's its the one that you see goes between the top of the motor and the "strut bar". then after that the front and rear engine mounts can go bad. But also check your torque mount. If they get sloppy it makes the car feel really bad.

Ok i have been think about doing this for a while but was always unsure about waht the right way and right fluid to use way so with this thread open i am going to ask now.I have a 2003 S60 AWD 2.5T geartronic not sure if that matters. Now i went to Volvo and they said all they do is drain pan and refill. He showed me trany fluid it looked like 1 liter i guess.Does this sound right.it was $99.00 for the fluid? Also IPD kit and fluid(Mobil ATF 3309 ) is that what i need?
