Default Rad fan question

2006 S60 low miles
Noticed today on start up the rad fan spools up way beyond normal, sounds like a small jet winding up and back down when I shut the engine off. Coolant is up, heat and cold are working. Dash temp. gauge reads cold after several minutes running. Any ideas?

Thanks for the comment, it's a ways for us to get to a dealership, but I guess that's the likely path. Are these fans supposed to be variable speed or just on and off as required?

They are variable, you might have a sensor reading faulty or something along those lines.

I would think so. It appears to be reacting to wrong information. Another site suggests the thermostat for a similar problem. He acknowledged it seemed counter-intuitive, however it was the fix. I'll report back after I take it to the dealer.

Problem solved for now. Pulled connector of heat sender and reconnected it. Fan operates normally. Thanks very much for the suggestion.
