Default Remote keyless entry not working

I recently purchased a used 2005 S60 from a used car dealer. While test driving the vehicle, I didn't think about checking the remote to see if it functioned as it should. None of the buttons do anything. I thought it was just a dead battery, so I replaced it, but that didn't solve the problem.

I've done some snooping and I see a lot of posts about turning the key on/off 5 times and pressing the lock button to "reprogram" the remote, but these are specifically related to older model 850/870s. Is there a similar procedure I can use on my S60? Am I just doing the procedure incorrectly? Or am I hosed, and have to take it to the dealer?

Did you ever get a fix for this?

My remote will unlock my car, but I have to lock it with the key. I tried the five and the eight off-to-I or II processes, and still I can only unlock with the remote.

Originally it was the opposite (lock worked but not unlock), but my step-dad did something with it, and it switched! Now I'm even more frustrated. If anyone has a remote re-program trick that is confirmed for S60s I'd love to know

Check ignition switch.
If computer sees key in the the ignition you cannot lock the car.
