Default Rusted brake caliper piston - is this normal?

I replaced the front brake pads on my '07 S60 (16K miles) yesterday and when I removed the inner brake pad from the piston, the inside of the piston cylinder was extremely corroded (see pic). This was apparent on both sides. Is this normal?

When I removed the pads, it appeared there was still a good amount of pad left exept the top/bottom of the pad (where it concaves in) was deteriorating away. When I would applied the brakes, it felt like there were no pads left which caused me to assume they needed replacing. Now that they're replaced, there's a noticable difference but I'm still feeling a slight vibration when making sudden stops.

My 05 v70 and 06 s60 look exactly the same as yours. I asked the dealer what they thought of it the first time I changed the brakes (stillman volvo, west chester, PA). They said it was harmless and normal - glad I have the 100K warranty. At this rate the caliper pistons will be dust in a few years.

Does is snow a lot in PA? Lots of salt on the roads during the winter? I understand this greatly contributes to rust on these components.

Never saw rust on my calipers. Yours need a lot of cleaning. For those living in snowy
areas and salt is used on the roads, it would probably be best to flush brake fluids
after winter to remove moisture in the system.
