S60 Airbag Recall/Volvo parts shortage/What to do?
I received a letter from Volvo in December 2021 regarding Safety Recall 21V-766 for my 2005 S60. The recall is for the driver's side airbag. There is a risk that the airbag, upon deployment, may explode. In their words, "In the event of a crash where the driver airbag is activated, the driver might be struck by sharp metal fragments from inside the inflator potentially resulting in serious injury or death." I scheduled an appointment the very next day for the very first opening available, which was yesterday, Feb 14th. When I arrived, I was told that Volvo is having a parts shortage nationwide and they weren't able to fix the problem, nor did they have any idea when the parts may come in. Who knew? Nobody. It could be next week or next month or six months down the line. That's the answer I got. Sooo...I'm not feeling safe driving my car and with no idea of how long I will have to take this risk when driving, I'm feeling inclined to disable the airbag system. If I pull the fuse for the airbags, will that be enough? I contacted my local Volvo dealership about this and they advised me not to disable a "safety" feature, but with this recall issue, are my airbags really a safety feature? At the very least, the driver's airbag feels like a death risk. Does anyone have any feedback/recommendations regarding this issue? I could use some guidance.
