On my 2001 T5 with a manual 5 speed (79 K Miles),I hear scrapping / grinding noises in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.
No noise in1st or 5th.

Also, if I push the clutch in these gears the noise goes away. Also, if I let the car coast in neutral, there is no noise with clutch pushed or released.

Any ideas???Is it the gearbox, where can I get a used one???

 

I would have it inspected by a tranny shop. I wonder if it is a throwout bearing starting to go bad. I haven't seen one of those tranny's go bad.

 

Only two really old posts, for posterity I'll include myself and my results. My 2004 v70 t5m has the exact same symptoms but it's a clacking gear sound, no scrapping or grinding.

I suspect the tranny itself since I had the entire clutch replaced (valet torched it dragging the clutch up three levels of underground parking) 25k KMs ago.
