The S60 tranny
Okay i'm kinda new to the S60 i have had it for a month, and this is the first automatic i have had in about 7 years. So i was wondering if everyones is like this. I noticed when I come down from aggressive driving to regular driving the tranny wants to hold a gear longer. I know in VW's it does this cus of the drive by wire. So i'm guessing Volvo is the same. Also it seems like the shifts are pretty firm, is this usual? And finally, what does it take to do a tranny swap in these cars. To go from auto to manual, i have done many VW's and BMW's but never a volvo. And if I do a swap, does anyone make LSD's for these cars.

RE: The S60 tranny
i have an 01 2.4t
it is smooooth now, but before the etm update it was the suck.
this is also my first automatic and i have my last car down to where if people had never been in my car before they wouldnt have a clue that it was a manual unless they were lookin.
I dont think i will ever buy an auto again, and not because its bad but because i dont feel like i am driving.

If you drain and refill from the Plug it takes about 3 quarts.
It should be synthetic trans fluid.

Filling it up with Dextron or Mercon oils synthetic or not will toast the trans. Misinformation. Read the owners manual, call the dealer. The books say JWS 3309 in the manuals.
You need 3 drain and fills to do (mathematically) 82% new fluid.
Also who says the trans are weird??? They are extremely reliable and are the same trans going in Toyota Camrys and such. Very reliable from Aisin Warner. Toyota use the Mobil 3309 (or Type V-1) as well. Toyota dealer sells the fluid for $6 a quart for your information as well. That's another source.
Never ever use Dextron or Mercon fluid in the Volvo S60 Auto's.

Show me it's synthetic. How do you know? Tell me...
It's not good enough you "heard' it is. Show me how you know other than listening to other mechanics repeat the same misinformation.
Check out part number next time you go to the service parts area. part # 1161540-8. That is the JWS approved 3309 trans fluid for 5 speed AW transmissions automatics. Read the bottle, where do you get the idea it's synthetic.???
I trust you won't be answering this. No one has ever proved it.
Back it up then big guy. You can't at all...

Speaking of S60 trannies....
I don't think I have a trans dip stick. Could that be right? I have read a lot of threads where people have said that its hidden under some tubing on the driver's side of the engine bay, but I couldn't find it. In fact, the only thing that I did find was a brass-looking bolt head (fairly large) on the top of the trans where I would imagine the dip stick being. Thoughts?
I would like to do a trans flush, and don't know how to fill it back up from anywhere other than the dip stick tube. The dealer wanted $475 to do it, and stated that my car takes "full synthetic" trans fluid. lol... uh huh, suuuure it does.

My first inclination on reading was how could so many folks be wrong but then I went back to my owners manual. I had read 'synthetic' without absorbing everything else on the page. As I'm sure you all know, it's synthetic for manual transmissions and 11615408 for automatic's and as FredMc noted in this thread that Volvo part number translates to the oft mentioned 3309.
It took me many minutes with a flashlight to find the dipstick that 'Desert S60 T5' claims he doesn't have. It is hard to reach and even harder to see. Mine is a few inches inboard, an inch forward of the metal manuf. sticker on top of the transmission, and much lower than that sticker. And don't try to get at it while the engine is hot!
My wife's 2001 S60 T5 automatic intermittently clunks up/down shifting. The oil is brownish and doesn't smell burnt. There is 72k on the engine.
I am impressed with the tips, especially the flush kit from ipdusa but lacking time and experience I'm going to pay an independent mechanic to do the 3x drain/fill procedure. I personally don't do much maintenance on this car - that under the engine shield seems to be more than I want to fool with. Just changing front end light bulbs makes my blood pressure go up.
Nice forum,
Thanks, Jon
