scanner...as in CEL code scanner???
I bought one from the local parts store for 150 bucks, but they has some as low as 50 buck.
It has already paid for itself..

I've heard that not all brands of scanners can properly "talk" to Volvos...
I'll get the make, and model of mine, and post it again.

Talking

Yea, one of those. I'm tired of having to pay the shop $65 every time a code comes up. My fiance has one but it doesn't fit my car (he haves a Audi A8). And I know he bought his off eBay, I can't seem to find one on there for my car. I saw the ones in Auto Zone for $150, but I wasn't sure if it would fit my car. But I would greatly appreciate it if you could give that info, that would be great. Thanks!

I bought mine from a place called VIP auto...a chain auto parts store.

The reader that I bought, can be used direct with any 1996+ car alone, and can read earlier cars with an additional cable.

The scanner you will need will have to be used with OBD II (2) cars..
Mine was made by a company called Actron, and it was priced at $150.00
Auto zone carries a different brand if I remember...not sure if it's compatible with "Volvo speak" ....most likely is will do fine

They start around 40-50 bucks for a reader, which also resets the check engine light as well.

The only major difference between mine, and the cheaper version, is that the cheaper version will give you a code (if there is one) such as P0305...and you'll have to look it up in a little book that comes with it, to determine the problem.
mine says the code, and automatically states what the problem is...

Model # for mine is CP9185
Model # for the cheaper version is CP9410
