Default Shifter Stuck In 'Park' Position

Okay, here's the latest issue that yours truly is running into. About a month ago, my shifter button broke on the ****, but it has held in place enough that I've been able to shift gears without any issues other than the minor annoyance of the piece being broken. However, this morning when I hopped in the S60 to take the daughter to school, I could get the car started but the shifter wasn't leaving the 'Park' position for ANYTHING.

Here are the relevant details: broken shifter button, outside temp of 55 degrees this morning, and car parked on about a 30 degree incline. I let the car idle a few minutes, so it should've been plenty warm.

I reviewed all the threads I could find here at this fantastic place, concerning "stuck", "park", and "shift". I found the solid info on the S60 not wanting to leave park when the temps are lower. Also found the issue about the car being on an incline, and the situation where you have to manually cause the ignition lock to disengage by disconnecting the battery terminals. I suppose my question is this: What should I check, in order of failure potential? Thanks in advance for any help on this, y'all!

get a new shifter handle, they are easy to replace. I had to do mine not long ago for the same reason...
