Default steering noise and gas mileage

Hi -

I've got a 2003 S60 2.4 AWD with 60k miles. A first time volvo owner. I love it! BUT - there a few things:

1. My info/message box tells me my average speed is 14 mph, gas mileage is 17mpg. I think those particular messages aren't correct........? The instantaneous mileage seems to be correct, as well as the miles-to-go before empty. The error messages work (or appear to work) - I've gotten one for the 60k mile service and for a blinker light bulb.

2. It makes a noise when I turn left or right. Kind of a moaning sound. It's hard to explain this noise. It feels like it's "laboring" to turn and makes funky noises.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, Have a great day!

I have an '01 S60with less than 70K on it.It alsomakes that sound if I turn the wheel as far as it will go both left and right. I had low power steering fluid at one point and I filled it to the specifications but the car has made that sound on the sharp turn/u-turn the whole time I've owned it.

I was wondering if there's anything I can do about that too...

could be the tires rubbing on the plastic of the wheel wells at full turning.
or is it a different sound?

Would the factory tires actually rub on the wheel wells? That'd be strange, wouldn't it?

I don't know what it is...

Thanks for the reply.
It's a different sound. I've heard this rubbing sound you're talking about - it happens when I make a hard (really hard) turn.
This sounds like it needs to be lubed. I checked the power steering fluid and it looked okay, but I did that right after I drove it. I plan to check it when the engine is cold to see if I get a different reading.

Yes on the S60 tire rubbing is a fairly normal phenomenom. Even with the stock tires, the dealer assures that it will never cause any problem. I'll have to check on that fluid bottle link, cause I have a similar noise, and I just assumed it was just an AWD thing, since I had never had an AWD car before.

Interesting. Was unaware that the factory size tires would rub. My car isn't AWD. I'm checking out that link that erriversable posted.
