OK - about brakes. Dealer service is expensive but it does come with a useful check-out sheet detailing the items checked - in this case, the front pads were down to 3mm - time to renew and the rotors were pitted - another replacement job.

I was, of course, provided with a recommendation and estimate that I chose to decline for two reasons: It was very high but, more importantly, they would fit only the OEM parts and, based on experience, I prefer alternates.

My choice and reasons: Akebono "Euro" ceramic pads and Brembo rotors. I have been using this combination on my cars for ~ 20+ years. Braking is very good, dust accumulation is near zero and, while the pads will, of course, wear and require replacement, once this combination is fitted I have never needed to replace the rotors. Although it may be counter intuitive, it appears that harder pads are easier on the rotors than soft ones.

Just one opinion but thought some might find it useful.

I've done ceramic, semi-metallic and organic pads over the years over a few different car models and always used Brembo or Zimmermann rotors - never had warping issues. As to the pads making the rotors last longer - I've never noticed a difference - but then again I always do the rotors with the pads, particularly since its pretty wet/humid in New England and there's always a bit of rust going on. I'm now back to organic OEM pads mostly because I prefer the feel over cutting back on the dust, but that's my preference.
