Default Swedish whimsy???

What I am about to report may have a rational explanation but, for the moment, I shall consider it a combination of Swedish whimsy and oriental inscrutability.

In an earlier post, I raised the question of an issue updating the maps on my 2015.5 V60. I followed procedure, downloaded the files, plugged the flash drive in and was rewarded with a screen announcing that the update was proceeding. Some time later the message changed to "Update failed press Exit" I had noted that the "press Exit" action immediately returned me to the "Maps updating screen"

Tech support at Volvo USA could only offer a suggestion to be certain that the flash drive format was correct and, after that, see the dealer.

The dealer: Bring it in and we'll see if we can find anything (They said they had never seen the described problem) $100+/hour fishing expedition? No, thanks

I wondered if, each time the "Exit" was pressed, the system went back to the initial point or, since one can shut the car down while installing and it will resume on restart, the interrupted (failed) process would resume from the failure point.

I left the flash drive in the car and, over a couple of days, dutifully responded to the Exit command. Last night the failure message came up after a few minutes of driving. "Exit" again. Less than 5 minutes later the screen announced "maps updated"

I checked this morning. The map version had been 31396472. It is now listed as 31676533. I am assuming that this is the current version.

What went on here? A random read error? an incipient disk failure in the Sensus system? a flaky flash drive? or, perhaps, a random test to see if I was persistent enough to be a Volvo driver?

For the moment I'll leave my Garmin Nuvi in the car as back-up

BTW - clock updated itself to Daylight time!
