Its not all that bad if you have done timing belts in the past.
Check the water pump for weaping out of the weap hole.
I would atleast check the spark plugs and see what they look like.

A decent tool set should be fine.
Try to find a disk called Vadis.

 

I am having trouble getting my sunroof to open in full. At the
moment it only opens about 70%. Any ideas on how to fix this problem.

 

It might need to be recalibrated.

I just took of my timing belt inspection cover on my '01 S60-T5. It has 50K miles on it and the book says to change the belt at 100K/7yrs. The belt looks pristine. It is pliable with no cracks at all. I cranked it around and couldn't find anyting. It was a relief to say the least - not to mention the savings!

I thought I'd post this for anyone who has low mileage but reached the age mark. It appears mileage is the determining factor rather than age - at least in my case.

hello again. I posted a year ago and asked about the time interval for timing belt change. I was told 7 years. I had the car in for its 30,000 mile maintenance at a dealer. They didn't mention anything about the timing belt, so I asked about the age vs. mileage thing and they said 5 years.

Also said they do some other stuff too, like change the water pump...cost is about 1100 bucks.

What do you think? There are some reputable highly recommended Volvo guys around. Is it time to make the leap from the dealer's service? (I didn't buy from this dealer, but they've been very professional IMHO.

I would have someone show it to you and if it looks like on the pics replace it. If it is not cracked then leave it till 7 years.

I did mine today. Belt, tensioner and idler. It is an easy job, about 2.5 hours on garage floor. You do need an impact gun and a gear puller to get the balancer off.
Hardest part is gettting the accessory belt back on.
Note for next time once the crank pulley nut is off. Hit the pulley with a heavy rubber mallet or a dead blow hammer sealed in rubber and it will come loose.

@ TECH Hi I was just reading through this as I will have to do mine in the not too distant future. Are you saying that I won't need a harmonic balance puller and can just use a dead blow hammer? or is that just for the pulley and I will still need to use a puller on the balancer?

You do not need a puller the hammer will knock it off. If you try to use a pulley the timing pulley will come off. You want to leave that pulley on.

 

Hi, I think that I might have a bad timing belt tensioner. I have a 05, s60 2.5T with 64K miles. When I start the motor cold I hear a rasping repetitive sound coming from inside the timing belt cover on the side of the motor. It changes as I increase the rpm. It's quite loud and you can clearly hear it as I drive by at low speed. Once the engine gets about 2/3 of the way to normal temp it stops. I know the tensioner adjusts based on temp, so I was wondering if maybe the bearing is shot. Is this possible?

It is very possible it is bad.

 

Yup it was! I got it fixed at the dealership - new tensioner pulley and timing belt.

My car is now 7 years old and has a little over 60k miles, I am going to order the parts for doing the timing belt. I see that FCP Groton has two kits, Volvo and Other for this car. Should I stick with Volvo? or is the Other of as good quality? Also I will be needing to do plugs in the near future, are there boots and or cables that need replacing?
