Default Transmission Forward Drive 3 sec delay

Hello.

Car - s60, 2.4t, 2001
When switching from (R)everse to (D)rive, car waits for about 3 sec. Then, I feel a push and car jerks forward a little bit. If I'm not pressing break pedal hard enough it jerks forward very strongly, plus I hear a clunk.

6 months ago transmission tested by dealer with no fault and software reset was done. Before that, car would jerk forward when pressing gas at the stop sign or a light, probably started from 2nd gear.

Is it a Mechanical or an Electrical issue, what do you think? Thanks in advance for your reply.

btw: thanks for sharing on this forum. ever since I got my car, all fo you guys have provided tons of valuableinformation.

Baz

01 and 02 have transmission problem most likely with the Valve body in the transmission (may or may not adress problem completely). In 03 ish to 04 and upthey change the design of the valvebody inside transmission. I got the exact same problem with my car. For me I keep changing transmission fluid and flushing stuff out and re-adapt the transmission over and over to compansate shifts as much as possible. Due to age of my car and your car is not worth it to put in new valve body inside transmission... since it can cost at least a $1000 including labour. I would drive till the transmission died and then get a used one out from a similar car that is compatible (from a 2003 and up vehicle "used ones around "$1200.00" not including labour) . DON'T GET REMAN TRANSMISSION will not last long... hope that help

Bad news, $....

I have the same problem with my 2002 V70 non-turbo. Just ordered a new valve body and seal kit for the transmission. It is an updated design with hopefully all the issues fixed. Will install it in about 2 weeks.
Has anyone done one of these yet? Just looking for pointers. Looks like a 3 or 4 hour driveway job.

How much did the parts cost you? Did you order them from US or Canada?

Btw: if you're in Toronto, I can suggest you a very good mechanic specifically for Volvo. He would not rebuild the transmission, but for general Volvo specific stuff he is amazing and very good priced.

Done it several times but will require a hoist since part of the subframe need to be dropped down (can be dangerous if inexperienced) also new Volvo silicone will have to applied to transmission pan (old have to either scrapped off or sand off with grinding disc) The tricky part is the wiring and routing. It's not especially hard but have to be careful. Not to mention those transmission only take Volvo synthetic trans fluid. Also a re-adaptation will have to be done with dealer specific computer and a specific test drive with schedule will have to be done after replacement of valve body.

Bought the parts online.
CDN dealer list was $1457.00 + $34.00 for seals = $1491.00 + tax= CDN$1700.00
US dealer price USD$810.00 + $24.00 for seals and $20.00 for shipping + P.S.T. and G.S.T. =CDN$925.00.
Volvo Canada must be smoking some serious crack to come up with those prices.

Thanks for taking your time to write this. Do you have a link or a phone number where I can buy transmission parts for my car as well? Many thanks.

off topic:
Speaking about purchasing volvo parts in general, Volvo prcices are outrages. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from http://www.myswedishparts.com/ - very happy. I also ordered a replacement keyless entry remote from the same online store, dealer will program it tomorrow, will create a separate post topic if remote works.

Finally got to this job. I did it on the garage floor in 10'F temp. Not my idea of fun but tranny got worse with the cold temps. It took about 5 hours to complete. It is a pain because the engine has to be supported and the subframe dropped down for access. Also the wiring connectors would not come apart. I had to cut the old ones off.
The car drives like a dream again. Shift as it should without delay and no flare between shifts.
Total parts was around $850.00. Local shop wanted 4 hours labour. Doing it yourself.....priceless.

B.T.W. As this is not an electronic part (only solenoids), the car doesn't know the difference and no need to go to the stealership to get any software reflash. I disconnected the battery before I started the job and reconnected it after. I do have the latest software version update in the trans ecm.

Regarding the 01 Trannies...

Vovlo tried a trick in the first year of the S60 called neutral-on-stop or something like that. When you stopped, like at a red light, the transmission would switch into N to save gas and then, when you take your foot off the brake, "seamlessly" go back to D.

This resulted in a higher percentage of transmission failure, by far, than any other year.

This was fixed by a software update in the early months of the 02 MY.

The ones with the most damage seem logically to be the ones that got updates late.

Just FYI..

Yes, but the 02 and oldertransmissions also have a valve body that does not function properly. It has been replaced by an updated version. It is physically different and even comes with a new wiring harness. This is the only fix for the 01 and 02 transmissions. I believe the 03 and later have the updated valve bodies. (please correct me if wrong).

Will the upgraded 2003 valve body fit a 2001?

I haven't had one of these torn down yet but my day is coming. Are the shift selnoids part of the valve body? (Old school TH350 Chevy guy) If they are and there were no major fluid routing changes would it be possible to just swap in the newer selnoids for the more cost effective repair?

I was doing some work on the wife'srecently purchased V70XC and unhooked the battery for a short. Now the tranny acts like third is gone and won't upshift unless you are in manual mode, take her to the rev line, double tap it up,let offthe throttle until she takes her time to get to 4th.1,2,4,5are fine. Maybe mine is just a selnoid?

Does anyone have a book for one of these trannies?
I am happy to find a site that people are actually working on these!!!

The new valve body is supplied with a new wiring harness as well because the solenoids are in a different spot on the new v.b. I don't know if a newer v.b. can be retrofitted to a '02 or earlier trans. As far as the actual replacement is concerned, it is just like a TH350 once you get the pan off. Getting the pan off is another story. It requires the subframe to be lowered from the car and the motor to be lifted a few inches. All this just for clearance to get the pan off!!
Yes the solenoids are part of the v.b. I did do this job in my garage in the middle of winter laying on the concrete withe the car on jack stands. I wasn't paying $500.00 for a replacement.
