Great thread. Saved my butt today when I experienced problems on the interstate while on a vacation trip. I was able to identify my problem as a coil. Found an Advance To read the code to confirm cylinder 1 misfire. Purchased a coil and found a shop to replace it. I was on the road in less than 2 hrs

Thumbs up

Excellent Post! My 2007 Volvo S40 started doing the exact same thing. Check Engine Flashing, Console stating "Try Slow Down or Shift Up", Running really rough and shaky when at a stop, and when moving it felt as if it was going to stall. We found this post, went to autozone and purchased a coil and new spark plugs. We switched out one coil at a time, and found that the coil in #1 was the faulty one! Car runs great now, and it only cost around 94 for everything.

Well, 108,094 miles and this happened to me on the freeway...scary. I thought it be so expensive $240 later, it was ignitor # (expensive little part)4 and some brand new spark plugs

If you are looking at a list of topics, and you see the "new thread" button upper left, you can click on that and type your question. That will make a new thread. You'll have to give it a title. You'll notice there are different sections depending on what model volvo you have.

Default Slo down or shift up

2006 v70 2.4. 135k. On highway @ 60 & got "message" while car sputtered. Slowed down and pulled over. Car settled down even gassing. Have icarsoft Vol II ODB and found a Cat dangerous code. Cleared it and gently drove <60mph to a friend. Reread codes, basic ODB P0089 and advanced Volvo section code ECM 261A - both fuel pressure regulator. Could explain CAT issue.
This is very different than above. Will report on solution.
.
Highly recommend icarsoft ODB for only $150 from hotsales21 on Amazon. Great service.

I have a 2013 Volvo S60 T5 with approx. 124K on it.
The error message showed up for me yesterday: "Slow Down Shift Up", Check Engine light came on, car started sputtering and shaking at low speeds and up hills.
I was hoping that like many on this thread it was an engine coil, but my mechanic did not find a problem with those.
I brought it in to my mechanic and he found 2 spark plugs that had metal shavings on them and one or two cylinders are not properly pressured (so technical, I know!), but was unable to locate the problem.
He put some cleaner in my system to hopefully "blow" out the gunk.
He did pull the following codes which are troublesome but don't pin point the problem: P0301, P0302, P0300...so cylinder problem
Does anyone have any feedback as to what else (besides coils) this could be.
If I have to get cylinders replaced will that fix the problem or is there an underlying issue perhaps?

Even though this is an S60 & V60 forum, the 6-cylinder T6 engine in my 2012 XC60 R-Design is the same T6 engine as an S60 or V60 R-Design, or as far as I know, the same as any 6-cylinder T6 of that vintage - other than the addition of the Polestar tune on the R. I am having this same issue "Slow Down or Shift Up" with engine running roughly with ~123,500 miles on the car. This occurred abruptly while driving down the highway. I expected to be closer to 250,000 miles before having any serious issues - it's a Volvo after all! I was hoping for an ignition coil or similar, but the Volvo dealer tells me the cylinder registering the misfire code has no compression and is recommending engine replacement. Has anybody else heard this? Have you fixed or rebuilt your engine? This is a labor-intensive job (costly) and more than I want to tackle on my own. I'm thinking I have one of three issues from least invasive/expensive to most: 1) Broken valve spring - remove the valve cover, 2) More serious valve issue or leak - remove the head, 3) cracked or otherwise failed piston ring - take the top and bottom of the engine off. Has anybody seen one of these issues? Trying to figure out if I want to spend the money to lift the valve cover and/or perhaps take the head off. Dealer says this is their second 6-Cylinder T6 failure in 8-9 years with many customers' 6-cylinder T6s still going strong at 220,000 - 240,000 miles. I find it hard to fathom that I need a replacement engine! Thanks for any insight.

Also, the message will go away if I turn the ignition off and re-start. The car has 109,000 mi. Two months ago, at 105,000 mi, I had the timing belt and water pump changed, and tune up completed by an independent mechanic that specializes in volvos and saabs. The car ran smoothly. A week later, I brought the car into a Volvo dealer for a software update for Recall 155. I noticed the car was idling roughly that same day. Any connection? Also, my check engine light had come on prior to this event, and my independent mechanic said the front oxygen sensor would have to be replaced at my next appointment at 110,000 miles (along with oil change and front brakes). What is causing the warning message? What needs to be fixed? Does this require immediate attention? Thank you!

my 2016 xc60 is having the same exact problem did it require immediate attention

Question How was your power train?

Hello, did you have any major damage to your power train when you were driving your vehicle to the dealership? The same thing just happened to me and when I was getting ready to pull over a plume of white smoke came from under my hood. It is now sputtering and and threw fault codes for several cylinder misfires.
