Default try slow down or shift up

hi guys....
I had recently a problem with my volvo s80 2.4, the problem is that 2 weeks ago when I stop at red signal my engine shutsdown this happen twice a week. Later on, the yiellow alarming engine is displaying on dashboard sometimes flashing...and a message on screen says: (try slow down or shidt up). Engine sound is not smooth, I hav ereplaced spark plugs and fuel filter but no improvement. Any body having clue what is wrong with my car. now odometer reading 124000KM, please advise to help me solve this problem. My city is not having specialsts or dealer. I have to travel 500 KM to show it to volvo dealer. Waiting your help. Thanks in dvance...

I would try cleaning the throttle body.

I assume it is a 2005 or later car?

That is strange I have never seen that message before.
I would try to have the codes pulled.

Tech,
I would like to do that, I want to see all possible causes for this particular message (troubleshooting). How to do that?????? as I'm new to such stuff.

Sorry to say but most likely you will have to go to the Dealer or a Volvo specialist shop to get the codes pulled.

I had this problem with my 2002 S60. It means one of your cylinders is not firing. In my case, it was the exciter-coil for the #1 cylinder. Unlike some other vehicles that have a single ignition coil for all the cylinders, the S60 has one per cylinder and mine had burned out. Dealer replaced it at a cost of about $500. It has happened twice in 300,000 miles on my car.

missfire possibly, the first thing i would do is scan the codes, but you already skipped that for some reason

Simular to a previous post I had this problem with my 2002 S60. I had my car towed to the dealer because I was scared to drive it thinking I may damage something else. In my case, it was the ignition-coil for the #3 cylinder. The service advisor said mine was shot. They additionally suggested spark plugs, air filer, oil change and a software upgrade...about $600. I hope it fixes the yanking my car occassionally does on side roads...

If I'm not mistake that is due to a fault Crank sensor. It's throwing your timing off which causes the missing effect and the stalling.Without codes or troubleshooting it's hard to tell. Personally if I had to drive that far I'd replace the sensor first if I had no other way of troubleshooting if I could get one for fairly cheap. I'm assuming you've already checked the coils and the fuel pressure. With a warning message like that I would look towards rpm trackers as the PCM is getting a signal that a high rpm is detected.

If you haven't checked the coils then I would do that first! however, it should have popped a p030x code saying a misfire on cylinder detected from the readings from crank sensor if the sensor was working correctly by means of the PCM. That is why I was suggesting the sensor being bad.

I have a 2012 XC-60 R-Design with the same 6-cylinder T6 as was used in the similar era S80. I am having this same issue "Slow Down or Shift Up" with engine running roughly with ~123,500 miles on the car. This occurred abruptly while driving down the highway. I expected to be closer to 250,000 miles before having any serious issues - it's a Volvo after all! I was hoping for an ignition coil or similar, but the Volvo dealer tells me the cylinder registering the misfire code has no compression and is recommending engine replacement. Has anybody else heard this? Have you fixed or rebuilt your engine? This is a labor-intensive job (costly) and more than I want to tackle on my own. I'm thinking I have one of three issues from least invasive/expensive to most: 1) Broken valve spring - remove the valve cover, 2) More serious valve issue or leak - remove the head, 3) cracked or otherwise failed piston ring - take the top and bottom of the engine off. Has anybody seen one of these issues? Trying to figure out if I want to spend the money to lift the valve cover and/or perhaps take the head off. Dealer says this is their second 6-Cylinder T6 failure in 8-9 years with many customers' 6-cylinder T6s still going strong at 220,000 - 240,000 miles. I find it hard to fathom that I need a replacement engine! Thanks for any insight.
