You mean the air filter was out, or the airbox was off? At least on the R the stock air box is quite restrictive. Maybe something like this, got to post #33...

If you put a cone filter on then you will hear it all the time.

You might hear it with a K&N panel filter.

You might hear it with the drop filter. I have never tried one, I do have a cone filter and I hear it.

Personally I don't use any oiled filter. If you over oil it it can mess with the MAF sensor.

with the complete air box closed with a k and n panel filter in u cannot hear the whoosh from the cbv releasing pressure, with windows open and no ac/heater or radio on u can hardly hear the spool of the turbo...if u like the sound remove the box leave the front dampers to bring some cooler fresh air from the grille in that area and box off the bottom and 2 sides nearest the engine and run a cone filter

and build a custom heat shield...nothing too fancey.

A peice of doulbe-walled cardboard, cut it to the shape you want and use some Rust-oleum high-heat BBQ black and some rubber as a seal.
Or get a small plastic bucket or trash can and put the filter in there, and paint it.

Here is what I did to my dad's car:

I went on Eurosporttuning.com and bought the setup with cone and heatshield and other parts needed, it was only like 125 bucks or something, easily installed. The sound is awesome, it definately makes the car sound more beefy as well. I definately recomend the one I bought. Good luck!!

Go to autozone and pick up a K&N cone filter ($30-$60) or a Spectre cone filter ($25).
I have a spectre cone filterand it works very good.

Don't give away my secret!!!!
My dadscar in the picture came with the filter, so all thatwas added was the heat shield, which was made out of left-over material from my CAI. The one on my car cost me ~$50.

The filter will not mess up the MAF. No filter should mess it up. If the owner over oils it...then yes it will.

I don't remember the OD of the MAF's. You will have to measure the outer diameter of the MAF where the hose connects.
The filters from spectre come with a 3in insert all the way to a 4in insert. K&N has cone filters withs ID's of 2in all the way to 7in. so you will have to find one that fits.

Edit: the sound in the video is the stock CBV which is the same as a BOV. Yes it sounds awsome.

And if oil scares you ....AEM sells oil free cone filters

Yes, but as far as performance, what do you get?

Thanks

Well as far as preformance...

Not much...Maybe 2-8hp, and I think the EST intake still lets in some engine heat though.
This is most useful when paired up with an exhaust system and an ECU upgrade.

I would say that I noticed the throttle response more then anything... is it gonna be a huge difference in 0-60 probably not, but before I had it, there was a split second when you step on the gas, and when the car actually goes, and now it's like step on the gas and go... I recomend it, and it was an easy install. took about fifteen minutes.

+1

Plus the EST probably looks nicer than mine anyways.
