Uneven Tire Wear Problem - 02 S60
I'm new here and hoping someone can help me with an on-going issue with tires on my S60.
I'm on my third set of tires now and the last two have completely worn out on the inside and outside edges of the tires. They both have developed a cupping effect very noticably. I'm tried balancing, alingments numerous times and have not had an success. The last attempt now is having them Road Force Balanced which was recommended by a independent Volvo shop near me. They have also worked on it.
The tires appear to be cupping on the inside edge on the driver side and outside edges on passenger, front and back the same.
Any idea what I have going on? At this rate, I'll be going through a set of tires every two years. So far, three sets thus far in 116K miles.
Thanks guys!
-Phil

RE: Uneven Tire Wear Problem - 02 S60
There can be a few things causing this:
1: If you have not changed the Wheel bearings at all (stock), then they are probably gone, causing the inside wear.
2: If you have to muchnegative camber. your wheelswillbe angled inward towards the top of thefender, causing theinside part of the wheels to wear.
3: Something else in the suspension is messed up.

As TIPSP said Cupping could be anything from bad alignment, wheel bearings, to worn suspension pieces. In addition to that if the tires are worn on the outsides, they are underinflated.
Are you rotating the tires and checking the tire pressure regularly? Personally, I would try another place for an alignment if you've only been using the same garage, and have them check the rest of the suspension too. I have alignmet specs if you need them...although its for an R, I don't know if it would be different.

Thanks for all the info. I'll be speaking with the garage.
As for wheel bearings, is it normal to expect to replace them at 116K?
I have tried alignments by at least three different garages w/o any noticable changes. The last one that was going to do it, found I need or think I think a LH inner tie rod replaced before they could align it. I have to check, but I know I've replaced some already.
As for inflation & rotation, I have been rotating this set every 5K+/- and each time telling them about the cupping. I assume I have the pressure fine, but I'm running about 32lbs, should I be running them higher? What do you suggest?
Thanks again. I never thought before to check with you all on my issues, I rely on these forums for my Beemer bike issues all the time, good to see there is a Volvo group out there!
Thanks again, Phil

I run from 35 psi in the summer to 40 in the winter. If you can't find the placard anywhere check this..

Wish I could help more.
