Default V60 - first impressions

Last week I traded my 2009 V70 for a Certified 2015 V60 - Platinum edition. The V70 had replaced a 2003 V70T that, unfortunately, blew a cylinder at 150,000 miles. The '09 was an excellent car. I liked the styling and interior. It was very comfortable on long trips - a few glitches - no temperature gauge, less than outstanding fuel consumption and the comfort was, in part, a trade off for a generally less responsive feel than the '03 turbo. it was 9 years old with 135,000 miles and I could see the beginnings of "fix this, fix that" in an older car. The most recent repair - fuel rail pressure sensor $350. I was also hearing some noise from the transmission that was worrisome and there were a few other "when I get to it" items (like right rear door lock) on the list so the decision was made.

"New" V60 - Volvo certified with 4 yrs/60,000 miles left on warranty. To begin with, in my mind the sloping roof and rear hatch and 8" shorter length make it more like a hatchback sedan than a traditional station wagon. That's OK - house sold, living in an apartment so no more Saturday trips to Home Depot for lumber, mulch, large trash cans etc. There is plenty of room for my needs. Lots of tech- when I get accustomed to using it, I'll be able to judge how valuable it is. (80+ year old drivers have habits that are hard to break - the first thing I do is turn off the "stop/start" function) Jury is out on the built-in GPS - We'll see how it compares to my Garmin. I'm not really happy about the loss of an oil dipstick and spare tire.

Driving dynamics - a whole different story - overall much better than the '09 and better than the '03. The ride is a bit tighter due, perhaps, to the 17" wheels and lower profile tires. Power is definitely "right now" and the steering feel is very good. Brakes are good but I shall probably change to my preferred set-up, Brembo rotors and Akebono ceramic pads. Overall, I would characterize the difference, V70 vs V60, as "competent" vs "fun" A couple of surprises: The 4 cyl engine is as smooth as the 3.2L 6 and, after a week of driving around, the fuel gauge has barely moved.

Bottom line - looks like a good decision

I too bought a used v60 platinum about 2 months ago. Agree with you about the learning curve on different options on the car. I found it helpful to use the internet to research how many of the settings work - - - specifically you tube videos to augment the users manual. This is my 1st Volvo and I think it is a well put together car and combined with the CPO warranty you can't beat it. I am especially fond of the Volvo radar cruise control and other safety options

Default Update

Two months now with the V60 - overall very pleased - observations:

Fuel mileage very good. I don't have a reliable number yet since I have only filled the tank twice in two months (the 2009 V70 3.2L visited the pumps about every two weeks)

Updated the GPS - a fiddly and less than transparent process but it finally worked - better than my older Garmin

Road manners - just excellent - amazing power from a 2L engine - no obvious turbo lag and it carves the corners very nicely, thank you.

Figured out how to check the oil level - still a bit nervous about it - think it is a stupid system. If there were an aftermarket dip stick, I'd have one in a flash

No road trips yet so I can't comment on the cruise control.
