Default 1998 S70 5spd I am looking at

Hey guys, I think I found a great deal on an S70 in my area. I believe that its the base model, with a 5spd but I am waiting on some more info. But anyway, from the few pics I saw it looks to be in great shape. It has 161k miles, new battery, tires, muffer and good brakes. They also say it was well maintained. They are only asking $1000 for it which seems like a steal to me. Is there anything specific that I should look for/ask?

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum xceebeex

That is truly a great deal. Maybe to good to be true.
At that price it would be worthpulling a vehicle history report. If it is all there, sounds good, doesn't look like it was in a badaccident and the report isOK, They might just want to sell it to the first person to come along. Take a good look and drive it.

I was thinking it might be too good to be true too. But according to the classified, they are just looking to get rid of it because there is one less kid in the house now. This wouldn't be my only form of transportation either. Right now I drive an 02 AWD Bravada, but I saw this and I figured for $1k or so, I could putz around in this to save on some gas. Plus I could also use it to help teach the wife how to drive a stick.

But I obviously don't want to go and pick it up and then have to sink another $2-3k into it to get it running right. I am definitely no newb when it comes to cars, I had a pretty highly modified Z28 that I did myself and I always do my own work, but I don't have a ton of experience with Volvos. (Although I did have a 2001 S40 for about a year and half or so)

Welcome to the forum.

1. This sounds too god to be true.

2. Do a car check on it. Whatever that thing is called, CARFAX or whatever.

3. I would go and personally inspect the car myself. Inside, outside, engine bay, everything/

4. I would def. check if the timing belt has been replaced. They should be replaced at 75,000 miles then again around 150,000 and since this is over that mark it should have been done.

5. If you don't trust yourself to look at it and check everything have a local mech you trust do an inspection on it.

Thanks.

1. Yes I agree, thats why I immediately emailed the guy when I saw it.

2. I will try and get the VIN to run a CARFAX

3. Its located like 5-10 minutes from my house, so I most certainly planned on going to look at it in person

4. Yea, timing belt seems to be the thing to watch on Volvo's, I will make sure to ask when the last time it was done.

5. Yea, I hear ya on this.

Have they got bills and receipts for you to look at? That'll tell you what has been done to the car...
