Default 1998 s70 ABS, Check engine, flashing Arrow ??

I recently bought this 1998 Volvo s70 for my wife to drive back and forth to finish up her teaching degree.. She worked hard last semester and her daily is terrible on gas, so what better to buy then a Volvo right?

I got a very good deal on a well maintained and well appointed S70. The previous owner kept the maint. records and the car has had every service completed by a Volvo tech. The check engine light and ABS warning lights, and transmission flashing arrow were on 6 months ago and he had the car checked and the shop blamed a faulty ABS module which they replaced with a remanufactured unit. The car went through Marta and shortly after the codes were cleared the lights came back on. The car dives normally and the transmission shifts smoothly when the arrow isn't on, when it comes on it shifts a little harder but not bad... According to the records it was pulling transmission code "223" and the troubles were reset.

I bought the car and drove it home, on the way home the transmission up arrow started flashing anf the ABS and check engine light came on.. No real difference in performance, just Christmas came early to my dashboard.. I am going to buy a scanning tool, so I will check it out, but with the abs module only being 6 months old, do you think it is that AGAIN??? Anything else I need to look at?

Thanks in advance for your help, I have already searched quite a bit to no avail... Thanks again

I would have the ABS module tested. It is quite possible it is bad again.

Is it something I can test myself? Is there any danger in driving the car in the mean time? Anyrecommendations on where to buy a scan tool?

Finding one that reads the ABS and transmission is pretty expensive.
You might want to have someone pull the codes and look it over quick. Usually you would read the ABS sensors and go from there.

Also maybe the module is still under warranty and can be replaced.

Also a notable ocurance- I read that a lot of problems can occur from voltage drop across the battery cables.. Is this so? What are the symptoms? My battery terminal was heavily corroded and I cleaned the connection and left the cables unhooked overnight, I have yet to start the car since. BUT will do so when I get home.

I have also experienced the ABS light turning on and off intermitently... just an FYI.

I could be possible the best way to check is to check output at the alt first for the best reading. Then see the output to the battery.
See how much of a difference there is. If it seems like quite a bit then probe the positive wire just before the terminal and see what the voltage is there. The terminal might be bad.

But the light going on and off at times is the common ABS module problem.

If you really wanted to you can open it up your self and inspect it. There is a post on here showing how to open and what to check on it.

I have redone about 15 of them myself. The first one was on the wifes car that was about 6 months ago with no more problems.

That is the post.

According to the Shop it was a remanufactured part and carried no warrantee.... I think they may have just soildered the joints themselves...

I read the thread you linked, informative. I am probably going to attempt the rebuild, after the codes get read that is..

Sounds like a plan.

Although a reman part should carry a 1 year warranty as well.

The Volvo service center is checking on the warranty on the ABS module

The Flashing Arrow stopped, the abs and the check engine lights still are on, but I assume that when the ABS Module is replaced that will subside.. Thanks for the help.

Ok, so strange occurance...The flashing arrow light was off today, I took the car to a detail place to have it washed and vacuumed.. The car went through and when I got back in the ABS light was off and the transmission arrow was back on along with the Check Engine (as always).... Could it be water related? They did an undercarriage cleaning....

The car has no driveability issues, although it does seem to run a little rich..

Nice.. I just ordereda OBDII scanner... I went with a basic Actron CP9125 so that I can at least clear codes and figure out a basic Idea where to start... I am planning on removing the ABS module tomorrow and touching up the circuit board. I think I have the Torx Bit (number 5) so hopefully I can rule that out. I ordered the replacement module locally as well so I figured that I can't really mess this one up too bad.

OK, I am getting the...

Throttle position sensor code
And
O2 sensor Bank 1 sensor 1...

Would the O2 sensor code be thrown due to the TPS? I know the car is running really rich would that effect the o2 sensor?....

Clear them and see what comes back first.
Was the code a Slow O2 response? If so the sensor is bad.
I don't think the TPS code will throw an O2 code.
