Default 1998 Volvo s70 ABS and Service Light

Hi all,

Just bought a 1998 Volvo S70 from a dealer. And the service light comes on and off intermitently while driving. Also when I accelerated 1 day the ABS light came on and won't go off now. Any idea what might be the issue. I am going to take it to autozone to read the codes and report back here.

Thanks,

Service light has to be reset at the dealer or with a special tool. It basically just means it's been 3000+ miles since the light was reset.

As for the ABS light, it seems that most frequently it means your ABS control module is going bad. There's a rebuild service that is far cheaper than buying a new unit, and apparently the rebuilds are actually better than the "new" Volvo units that have a flaw.

The ABS light COULD just mean you need to add fluid, but it's most likely the module.

I have a 1999 V70 and when the module started going bad the lights on the dash would come on intermittently and with increasing frequency. It was not limited to the ABS light - the traction and others would come on. I had it rebuilt by this place and it has been working for over 2 years flawlessly. It has a 5 year warranty. Removal was fairly easy, you just need to get a 4.5 or 4mm torx. It tells you in the instructions.

As others said, likely the ABS module. When mine went, the TRACS light came on too. Get a rebuilt unit from an aftermarket supplier they recommend here. It's not that hard to swap.

Well I had my codes checked from a friend with a code reader. And the only code to pop up was a P0442 code. He then cleared the service light, but when driving it after that the light came back on, he checked it again with 0 codes showing. So I don't know why the service engine light keeps coming on and then off once I drive a little bit? Any idea and what the P0442 code was?

Can anyone tell me what a P0442 code is on a 1998 volvo s70?

The Service light is NOT the Check Engine Light, and it can only be reset with a Proprietary Volvo Tool. You can't just use a Scantron OBDII reader.

If I remember correctly, my S70 was a E5 External Torx. Some people might run out and get a Torx driver. It is actually an External socket, and it can be hard to find. I found mine at Advance Auto, but had to buy a complete kit of External Torx sockets.

Also, the heads of the bolts corrode and strip out VERY easily. Mine was "pre-stripped" for my convenience. I ended up cutting the head off of one of them with a Dremel and simply replacing the bolt\screw from one of my parts cars.

There is a guy on Ebay that sells them rebuilt for $69.95 shipped to your door. He allows you to send the core back on the honor system once you completed the job. His modules are very clean and always work great. Wish I hadn't waited so long to replace mine. I drove around for a year staring at both the ABS and TRACS light.

Make sure you buy the right unit, as they are different for TRACS and non-TRACS vehicles.

Yep, you are correct. I looked at my socket and it is a E5 Torx. It had been a couple of years and I took a guess - I knew it was a hard to find size. I found mine at NAPA.

When the ABS module goes out, you've still got brakes, but you've got no functioning ABS control anymore. It's a common thing in these older S70s - fortunately, a number of shops specialize in rebuilding them, which isn't too expensive.

The ABS is an easy fix mosey on over to volvospeed.com and get in touch with MattyMoo as mentioned earlier he is the one that will send you a fixed unit and on the honor system you R&R yours and send him your faulty unit back. Mine cost me $55 shipped and is THE cheapest way to do this by far even IPD charges almost $300 for these same units. Good Luck.

Yes replacing your ABS unit with a rebuilt one is far better than buying a brand new one, you can even drive your car without the module on, but, you got to be careful.

I drove mine for a year with a dead ABS module. Never a problem. Even had a few hard braking scenarios, and it really didn't concern me. No problems at all. I finally bought a rebuilt module from Matt in Michigan, and it worked flawlessly and is still working after almost a year. I only fixed it, because I was tired of ABS and TRACS lights on the dash, and because I could do it for roughly $60.

I would never buy a $300 replacement unit. It defeats the purpose of having a nice, cost efficient, reliable Volvo, if you have to dump excessively priced parts into it.

Many of the module rebuilders are very good at what they do, especially seeing as this problem is generally caused by bad solder joints on the module power connectors. It is a simple fix for these guys. And, it will save you all hundreds.

Please respect the honor system and return your old modules to them so that they can help the next guy.
