Default 2000 S70 Air Mix Control

I have a 2000 S70 and the air mix control doesn't appear to be functioning properly. Sometimes it doesn't turn, sometimes it turns freely but it never opens the vent. It is stuck in the closed position. I got a quote from the dealer and they said it would be about $400 for the part. They said that it can't be fixed and had to be replaced. Is there anything that I could try myself to fix it before having to get it replaced?
Thanks

What exactly do you mean.
The air control for the vents is built into the center vents.

do you have an aftermarket filter? sometimes this is triggered due to excess oiling.

The **** on the far left which controls the outside air either jams and does not turn or turns and does not move anything.

Behind the vents there is a rod that goes from the **** to a door in the dash.
I believe you can pop the center vents and check the rod.

How do I take the center vents out?

Use a hook tool and slide it into the vents and carefully pull the vents out.
