My oil pan threads are stripped and I am looking for a way to repair and avoid buying a new pan.
Any Ideas ?

 

This can be done with a threaded insert or Helicoil. You can do it or have a shop do it for you. This is not uncommon.

I talked to my mechanic and he seems concerned that these type of repairs are unreliable and are temporary at best. Your thoughts ?

Often inserts are installed at the time of manufacture to stave off future failure.
I think your mechanic is either too old, too young or misinformed.
This can be done in place and at a minimum of time and at a nominal expense.
