Default '98 S70 shocks/struts question

Hi all,

I'm currently looking at buying a 100k miles '98 S70. It seems like it's been well cared for. Only, the shocks/struts and springs have never been changed... When should you change those?

And do you need a lot of specialized tools to change those parts or an average week-end mechanic can do it?

Yes if you know your way around a car you should be able to do it.

If they have never been changed I would change them. You can do it with tools you have.

I would upgrade to something better. Bilstein TC's are the equivalent of the OEM Volvo shocks/struts. Bilstein HD's are a lot better and some are KONI's.

Thanks for your fast reply!

How about the springs? should they be changed also while i'm there? I don't want to lower the car as i'm often driving in badly conditioned roads...

I would leave the springs alone unless you see something unusual. Do replace the strut mounts especially the fronts. I'm surprise yours lasted this long. Mine started bottoming out aroung 80k.
