hey all...its been awhile, after we got rid of our 99s70 awd my wife always wanted another Volvo, so we came across this 98 S70R automatic with 171xxx miles for 5grand...car looks good and in great condition looks wise, but havent been to see it in person yet. Is the price good? is it a true R?? we are trading in our Olds Alero showcar since we now need a daily driver besides our Excursion diesel.

Pic looks good. Miles are a little on the high side. As usual, have it checked by a trusted mechanic, see if the timing belt has been changed and offer low book.

 

so this is an S70R?...I was under the impression that these are rare in the states?

 

I didn't even know they made and S70R in 98? I know the 98 V70R is AWD because my son has one. I did a look up and tried to find a 98 S70R and found that it was not an available trim package. Here is what I found:

can you do a look-up if i have the vin?..... YV1LS5647W2444790 that is the vin so if someone could possibly decode, we mayfind out if it has been shipped across thepond, or ???

The S70R wasn't imported to the states. Thusly it is very rare to find one in the states. Even if someone imported it, it would be almost impossible to find it.

From looking at it, you cannot tell if it is a true R.

1. It has the grille ok cool. You can buy that from the dealership and put it on any 98-00 70 series model.

2. It has the R bumper. Again this can be bought from the dealer and elsewhere and attached to any 98-00 70 series model.

3. It does look like it has the R rims.



Again these can be bought from the dealership and added to any 09-00 70 series model.

*What you want to check is the engine. I mean check it all over. It could just be a 98 V70R engine that has been transplanted into the s70. Which is nice, but still... You know what I mean.

However in the link above you can clearly see that the s70r and v70r in the pictures have the Comet rims which did come on the R models. So did the rim shown above.

Oh and the headlights are US SPEC. You can tell by the Amber insert on the turn signal. The European or E-codes have no Amber insert and are clear.

 

so is this the faker of the century, or couldit be legit by looking at the vin??

ok so if imlooking at the engine, what numbers in certain areas am i going to be looking? I mean if its a fake r then its not worth theprice, but if someone imported it, then well...we will have another V in the house.

I know exactly what your saying about the R parts, as i was discussing this with my wife as tomaybe someone would get the S&ampR badge on the trunk, R wheels, r bumper, and r grille, and etc.
it does have r rims, but in the link you provided the rims look like twisted spoke, where as these are flat or straight.

 

Check the VIN it should be able to tell you all the info you need.

Why not a dealership. I don't know where you can check VINS other then you can. Carfax I dunno.

Sounds like you made a very rare find. Imported from Belgium makes it European that's for sure. I'm pretty up on my pre 2000 Volvo's and I had no idea they even made this car. ****** it up before somebody else does.

edit...engine code according to vin is 56??..that doesnt even show up on the vin decoder on vlvworld???plot thickens

it is a 98 code says model is 850, but i cant find the engine code 56

 

My 98 V70 GLT has a '56' in the 6th and 7th positions of the VIN. I know the 98 'T5' has a '53' in those positions and the base model, non-turbo, has a '55'.

ok...i found 2 98v70 turboawd wagons with engine code 56, and one t5 that was just sold with engine code 53 so im thinking vlvworld is off on some numbers....but didnt all volvos get shipped across from belgium?

 

Both of my 850 R's have a '58', but that numbering scheme changed in 98 with the S/V/C70's. The link you gave above is right for the 850, but not for the 98 model year.

 

ahh...that would explain some things...how about the carfax, showing the car was shippedfrom belgium?
also looking at the engine, will it say Ranywhere on the valve cover like a 99v70r would?

sorry for causing any confusion...i found over on swedespeed, that any automatic equipped 98 s70r is just a turbo volvo with badging, where a "true r" as they say is a 18t turbo, big injectors and lsd 5spd.

 

so it is an r, but in badging appearence only...possibly...lol..
