Default 98 T5 ABS question

Hey guys, my old car broke down a while ago and I am currently looking for a new one. One of the cars that has been presented to me is a 98 s70 t5. I went to test drive it on monday. One of the cylinders [2] was misfiring that day but has since been fixed.

The main thing I wanted to ask about is the ABS system. During my test drive, when I applied the brakes [not overly hard] right as it stopped the whole car 'shuddered' with a pretty horrible noise as well for ~1-2 seconds. I am about 95% positive that it is the ABS because I have seen this before in other cars that I or my friends have owned.

What can be a likely cause of this, and what would be the solution? I was also looking to see how much a whole ABS system replacement would cost as the worst case scenario, but am wondering what I can do to check if that is the reason or not. It only did it once through the ~5 mile test drive in the city and the light did NOT come on.

The car has roughly 130k miles on it and the last service it had was the 100k at the dealers.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

It's probably a bad ABS Module. They cost about $600 new, but they can be rebult for about $125 and that includes a five year guarantee. Use the $600 as a bargaining tool for the car. 98 S70 T5's are fairly hard to find and good cars especially if it happens to be a five speed. We can hook you up with the guy who fixes the ABs modules if you need one.

That is what I figured. After taking into account about the module, how much does the labor usually run for? I assume it can also be dirt or what not in the brakes if it's been standing out for a few weeks. And the main question i guess is, if the ABS light did NOT turn on, is it really something to worry about?

well, light or no light, the car is not funtioning properly when braking. To me, that sounds like it should be taken care of, unless you dont need brakes..................[sm=badidea.gif]

Well after the cylinder malfunction was taken care of, I drove ~20 miles again on and off the freeway and it didn't make the sound again. I'm still a bit cautious about it though.

Thanks for all the replies and help!

If the ABs module needs replaced, you can do it yourself. It's relatively easy and on Vitor's website he gives very good intructions on how to do it. He has letters from women who don't do anything mechanical that did this themselves. It's just kind of hard to get to, but four weird torx screws that need a special tool is all you need to do. Victor even sells the tool for real cheap.
