Default ABS module 99 S70

I just had my 99 S70 at the dealer and I was told I needed a ABS module due to mt ABS light coming on and staying on at times. The dealer gave me a price of $1100.00. How difficult is it to change the module myself? and how do I ID the part to be sure I am getting the right one?
Thanks

Phew, $1,100…

I took mine out myself, sent it to someone who rebuilds them, got the rebuilt module—more robust than it was originally—back within a week, and re-installed it.

It only cost $125.

WoW. who did you send it to? can you run the car without the module? any special tools required?

I purchased a rebuilt one for $200 at FCP Groton, plus $150 core charge. It took me about an hour to do the whole job. I did remove the air box to get at the module. The only special tool you will need is a T5 torx socket. There are other choices here on the forum, you just have to search for them. As far as driving the car without it, I believe you can, but don't qoute me on that.

I used this guy and had a great experience.

Volvo ABS Control Unit Computer General Information

My experience of driving without the module is with a '96 850, but I'm pretty sure it would be the same (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Without the module intalled the speedometer and cruise control won't work, and of course you won't have ABS so you have to drive knowing that the wheel are going to lock up if you stomp on the brakes.

I had a similar experience. My ABS light came on, cruise control stopped working, speedo cut out... all signs pointed to ABS module. I was able to take it out and replace with a rebuilt version from FCPGroton, and consequently sent mine back. If you search, you might even find a coupon for a discount at FCP...

It is a pretty straight forward fix, although I did watch a YouTube video or two to give me an idea of where to start. If you're fairly handy, it should be a pretty simple fix. Google it or YouTube it for more directions.

Save your money and pull off the old one and get these guys to rebuild (re-solder) your ABS unit. ABS ECM, LCM items in MODULE REPAIR PRO store on eBay!
Most of the places on eBay are under $100. You need a reverse Torx socket to remove the four bolts.

Torx E5 1/4 in. socket required. $4.71 w/tax @ NAPA. TORX: T = male, E = female. FYI. This is a short socket. Harbor freight only had the deep socket set, I purchaased 12/24/11. ABS Control Module Service available on E-bay for these units, $45 plus shipping. Modular Repair Pro, 5864 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. 90019 (818) 429-4889.

Better deal is Harbor Freight. You get the whole set for $7.99
6 Piece 1/4" Drive E-Socket Set

and get the bigger set too just in case:
6 Piece 3/8" Drive E-Socket Set
