Default air pump

recently i had my S70 in the shope for a abs module the check engine light was on as well when the mechanic went to reset it he told me it was a air pump that controlled emissions that was the reason for it turning on so i called the dealer and they said it would somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 to get the parts for it and fix it this sounds crazy does anyone know of a site where i could find this part or parts cheaper? i dont even know what id be looking for so any help is appreciated

Here is a place for the part.

I hope yours is turbo thats what I looked it up for.

You might also need this if yours is bad.

I would also reccomend replacing the relay as well but I couldn't find it listed on the site.

I replaced my air pump over a year ago, the process is fairly easy. Once I found the proper part number I did a Froogle search to find the best price. You have to remove the battery and battery tray to get to the air pump. Also make sure you buy new hose clamps as the factory hose clamps are crimp on one time use and cannot be reused.

Here is a link for another possibility. I found this site that shows you how to convert a new/rebuilt VW air pump to work in a Volvo for a fraction of the price of a new/rebuilt Volvo air pump: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/air...cement_850.php

What is the purpose of the air pump? I think I am going to check mine now while most of my engine is scrapped right now anyway!

What should I check? the condition of pump and relay? are there any serviceable parts?

See if the relay has Water in it. Also check the pump for water.

If you have water in both replace.

The Air pump pumps Warm air into the engine at start up to help bring the Temp of the engine up.

at start up where does the warm air come from, is there a heater element in there anywhere? The ambient air around the intake air box and air pump would be the same temperature.

It comes from the exhaust system.

What happens if you don't change the air pump and just leave the CEL on? Seem like a lot of money to spend for something that only works for a minute or two.

Eventually when it fills High enough with Water it gets sucked into the engine and takes out the Mass Flow as well.

Here is a link to instructions on volvospeed.com:

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/airpump1.php

This is what I used when I did mine. In my case the relay was up next to the fuse box so I didn't have to replace it. I bught the pump and the valve used from Erie Volvo and they have been on for about a year now and no CEL.

i take it this is why the cars heat up so fast compared to a american made car. mines warm in less than a few minutes, it was sub zero this morning and within 5 minutes my car was warm.
