Default Automatic Transmission Fluid

My friend and myself were talking about getting our automatic transmission fluid changed. I was just wondering, what kind of automatic transmission do we have ?
He has a 2000 Volvo S70 GLT SE, and I have a 1998 Volvo S70 2.5 SE (non-turbo).
Do we need that special ZF full synthetic fluid or will the normal stuff you get at walmart work ? and how much transmission is needed for these cars.
I got a 2000 VW Jetta TDI, and the ATF for that car goes for like $20/litre, $35 at the dealer. which is crazy, i hope our Volvo fluids aren't that expensive.
thanks guys !

I believe that ATF (Dexron-III) fluid is needed for your cars transmission and your friends car Mobil/Volvo JWS 3309. Wait for experts opinions.
If you search trough forums you will find instructions how to do drain and fill

We are not going to do it ourselves, we are going to get our mechanic to it. My main question is basically our fluids. Do our cars take regular transmission fluid or does it need a special type of fluid? I hope my s70 runs with normal transmission fluid. A friend of mine has mentioned that it takes DEXRON-VI and that the DEXRON lll as been replaced with the later. Is that an expensive oil ? Don't want to break the bank with $30 litre ATF fluid, which I gotta deal with my other car which is a vw jetta tdi, which can only be bought at the dealer or special European oils shop. I hope it's not the same case with this car. BTW does this car have a transmission pan and gaskets? Reason I ask is because some cars do not, and if the tranny leaks, than the who transmission needs to be replaced like my brothers old Acura Integra.

why don't you read blackbricks answer to you again.

There is NO special ZF fluid for the Volvo. It's JWS 3309 (mobil 3309 fluid or the toyota T1V fluid) for 5 speed automatics like the 2004 you reference. A S70 4 pseed automatic, uses dexron III fluid. Just do a simple drain and fill three times like an oil change and you are fine.
