Bought a first 1999 S70 - knock noise on downshift
Well I bought a 120kmiles S70 non turbo 1999 volvo. Got the car in great shape for 3800$, about half the market price here in Quebec.
On the highway, If I downshift 2 speed to pass, as soon as I drop the clutch I get a big knock, and it happend sometimes when I back up and hit the brake. I was wondering if it was the motor mount as when I shut the motor off, the car shake for 2-3 seconds.
I replaced the gas filter, pollen filter, did my oil change and replaced 2 burnt out bulb. Car is great.
Is there a list of scheduled maintance somewhere? The timing belt was done, brake are new, some parts of the direction were replaced last years.

This is a natural progression in the fine art of driving a standard. There is a learning curve in melding the throttle and clutch. The ultimate goal is to drive as smooth as possible.
At 70 mph, your rpm's are at about ~3000 in 5th gear. If you down shift to 4th, your rpm's will have to increase to match your speed. Try going 70 in forth..........High revs.
If you shift to 3rd from 70, not only will your engine have increase rpm's considerably, BUT, you are putting an enourmous strain on your clutch.
This is where your big knock is coming from.
Down shifting is usually used to match speedAFTER you slow down, or if you are racing and throttle up as you shift.
Practice.
As for when you shut the car off, make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor or the car is in nutral, when you turn the key off. If the engine is at to low of an rpm,in gear(under 600) your car will lurch.
I wish I could drive around with you for a few hours. Drive safe.

Well I always drove manual since I had cars, I'm downshifting at around 55mph, not 70. The knock can also be heard if I backup and brake (exiting my driveway). I know how to gauge the throttle/clutch, but I still need to adapt as every car are different. But this car has a problem somewhere, either a mount or a suspension/direction problem. The knock can't be heard every time.
As for when I shut the car, the clutch is pressed and the brake too. I think both problem are linked as it could be from a engine/tranny mount.
My past cars were 2 Ford Festiva (great compact car), a 4 door 1993 Civic.
I also have a little brake problem but I guess it's easily corrected, the carlean to the left slightly when I brake, I guess it's the caliper pins.

Sorry, Your 1st post sounded like you were new to standards.
My apologies.
I still wouldn't go from 5th to 3rd, unless I was going around 30.
Anyways, It does sound like a mount, You are problebly calling it right, The engine willlift and drop off of the broken mount.
(It most likely broke from your agressive shifting, LOL or not)
Check all the mounts, tranny and engine.

I guess I'll take a tour at my local volvo as the recall 155 wasn't done on it.
I bought it friday, done 200 miles on it max, I doubt it's my driving as I heard it 4 times, one right when I tried the car in front of the seller.
I guess going from a 1.5L 4cyl to a 2.4 5cyl is just a little bit fun I wish it was a turbo. Still a great car, let see if it will cost $$$ down the road.

At 50 mph I would have no problem going from 5th to 3rd in a five speed. If you are racing, 4th would not do the job. If I hit passing gear in an automatic at 50 mph it's going down to gears for sure. Sure sounds like a mount to me too.
