Default Brakes 101

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have a brake issue I'm not sure about. When I am driving and press the brake pedal, I get some initial resistance, then it goes pretty close to the floor before the pedal gets firm and the brakes start working. All the pads are good, fluid is at right level, no leaks. From what I know about brake systems, I think I need a master cylinder. Does this sound about right? Or is there another part I should look at before going to the trouble? The car is a '98 S70, non-turbo, 40k miles. Probably original brake fluid.

If I need to replace my master cylinder, is it a tough job on this car?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Sounds like you have some air trapped in the lines...Bleed the brakes and that should fix it.

Wait for others to comment

Thanks for the tip, TIPSP. I don't know how air could have got into the system, though. It hasn't been opened up since it was working properly. I may just change the fluid, which it needs anyway. This will get any air out that may be causing this. I'm still thinking that I need a master cylinder.

Well...hope the bleeding works.

If not, then post back and tech or some one could probably assist.

I would try bleeding first!
Sometimes the air is trapped and does not get released for a long time.
