Broken Pins on Stereo Connector, advice needed
I have removed the stock stereo that came with the volvo s70 and tested out a sony stereo after buying an adaptor, I am getting sound but can't adjust the volume (its an old sony stereo so may be bust) and I can't get any radio reception.
Is there an issue with getting volume control on new stereos?
The other issue is that the female connecter with 8 pins (may be 6, can't remember exact number) but two of the pins have snapped off and the connector still plugs into the old stock stereo but does the loss of two pins mean the connector won't work?

If you get sound but can not control volume, I would say the stereo is bad. That may also be the radio issue if you have the antenna wires pluged in.
As for the pins in the connector, that's no different than having broken wires. Those pins go to something, door speakers, rear speaker, ground, etc. You should get a new plug to replace that one.

Thanks for reply but what is the connector for that has broke? as it is coming from the black box and think its marked "volvo interface" and has three connectors (one is the antenna) but two of these connectors don't fit into an aftermarket stereo (but the stereo still plays sound) so was wondering if one of these are needed for the volume.
The other issue I have is that the radio is now locked and am aware you need to leave the key in position 1 for 2-4 hours and then enter the right code (which i now have) but is there a danger of draining the battery?

The after market radio is locked?
As for leaving the key in II, it should not drain the battery if nothing is on, like head lights. You can also just leave it and drive the car around until it goes to CODE again. You only need to do that if it says OFF.
The radio should control the volume, not the wire harness. The stock stereo is called a DOUBLE DIN system. Takes up two slots in the dash. Some radios will plug right in and some will require re-wiring. It's best to pay close attention to the wires you have and get a plug that will fit the new stereo, then wire it in. The problem is that you will have to identify all of you're wires. One wire goes to speakers and stuff, the other wire goes to an amp. Then you may also have a wire for a cd changer.

Its the stock stereo that is locked but I now have the correct code but want to install a new system so am now unsure of what one to get which isn't a hassle to install for a volvo s70 1998 model.
You can search STEREO and see what comes up. My wagon has a pioneer in it, with a cd player. You can ask Crutchfield, they would know. There are a lot of systems priced between $100 and $150 that have nice features and would likely sound as good as the old stock head unit.
Why do you want to replace the OEM unit?

Its the basic one with no CD, just cassette and radio and i've obviously searched for stereos and seen some nice ones but was concerned about the broken pins on one of the connecters but i looked on the back of the stock unit and that socket is marked as "cd" so i take it that connecter won't be used in an aftermarket stereo?
The plug with cd is for the external cd changer.
Got to look for it but I had a diagram for the radio plugs since the one on my 850 was somehow missing.
Volvo radios are plug and play, and believe it or not, mostly made by Alpine,so they are not as crappy as people think.

Yes, I knew they were alpine systems. My daughters S70 had a weak head unit in it & I found one sitting on top of a S90 at a yard so I snagged it for $25. It worked great & kicks butt. My daughter is thrilled. We took the face off of her unit so it would match her dash.
