tech help...just bought a 98 s70 with 145000 mikes. the timing belt has been changed,new tires and the interior and exterior are immaculate.
one problem though,when you first crank the car the a/c blows cold.after some time goes by the a/c stops blowing cold.i have a friend that is a g.m. mechanic and he looked at it.he says that the a/c problem could be my alternater?domething about the electromagnet wont engage the clutch because my alt reading on full load is in the 9's?i just dont want to buy one and it was actually the compresser.also today i drove it and the car started to miss at an idle,then the check engine light came on.i let it sit for a bit and restarted,the car ran fine...ahhh the car also has some light tapping coming from the passenger side of the car,almost sounds like valve noise.should i be worried about that or chalk it up to typicle high mile volvo traits.i got this car fo 3000.00 i hope i didnt make a bad desiscion. please help guys.this is nothing like my 91 240

 

The compressor Gap it to Large.
I would say the compressor is bad.
The Alt. dropping into the 9's might be another problem as well.
I would start with the compressor first.
Does the Alt. charge good with the A/C off?

Did you have the codes pulled for the light yet?
It might just need a tune up.

 

thanks tech...i am going to auto zone today to have the codes pulled.what would be a good parts list for a nice tune up?it also has some light lifter noise coming from the passenger side of the car. is this from the high miles?i am using 10w40 oil,i might need to change the weight to a thinner grade?

 

Tune up parts.
Dist. cap,rotor,wires,plugs,fuel filter,Air filter.

Give the Lifter noise a couple of oil changes and see if it gets better.

 

the girl i purchased the car from say that it sat up for about 4 months.i am hoping that it smoothes out.its not terrible but not purring.i appretiate your help on here man.i was starting to get nervous with all the calls to the local shops.you could tell they where seeing dollar signs.

 

the alt. charged at 12.4 with everything off.with everything on it dropped to in the 9,s.i am thinking that the bad air compressor might be pulling it down so low?
i think that i might go ahead and replace both?i really dont want to spend the moneyt but it might be best for safety and reliable transportation. also,do you happen to know where i can find carpet for this car?

 

12.4 is way to low for this car.
It should be atleast 13.5 See what the Volts are dirrectly at the Alt. You might also have a bad Battery terminal.

Sorry no idea abuot Carpet but at a Junk Yard.
