Almost always for a removed battery cable the problem is either the battery is dead or you have a poor connection. IF the only thing you did was remove the cable and the battery was good before that and a long period of time has not passed, the issue is the connection.

Measure the battery voltage. If it's 12+ V you should be good. If you have lights on the dash when you turn the key on, you have power. No lights, no power.

If you replaced the alternator as the reason to disconnect the battery cable, make sure you charge it first. Recharging a dead battery with the alternator right after replacement is a great way to ruin a new alternator.

To deal with the connection.
  • Take the negative cable off the battery. If you have the battery post tool, use it to clean the post and the inside of the terminal. make sure there is no white/green powder. If you don;t have the tool, use light sandpaper or a wirebrush. Don't remove lots of material, just clean the crud off. Both are lead and its very soft.
  • Take the positive cable off the battery. Clean it the same is above for the negative cable.
  • Attach the positive cable first. Tighten it down. Try to move it around the post. IF it moves at all it's not tight enough. if the lug is all the way down, you have 3 options. Either 1) replace the connector on the wire, 2) Replace the whole cable or 3)(and this is a terrible option but works in an emergency) use something metallic as a filler (alluminum foil as an example). Wrap it around the post a few times and attach the connector. Then do #1 or #2 when you have the time.
  • Attach the negative cable and follow the same steps as the positive.
