hi, i have 1998 S70 GLT with about 150,xxx miles and after hearing how good a my friend's 2001 Jetta VR6 sounds with an intake, i want to put one on my vehicle. so before i make any choices i decided to hear from you guys on your opinion. im looking for something around $60 range. so if anybody has any ideas on the brand, or even a link to the sale, than that would be great!

yea they do, but they are really expensive!

 

I hate to burst the bubble but...

1. No one really makes a Cold Air Intake for our Volvo's.

2. IPD USA and EuroSportTuning (EST) both sell what is called a Short Ram Intake (SRI). The cone filter is attached to your MAF and a heatshield is placed around it. It can be covered on three sides or completely enclosed on all sides. With the three sided version HOT air can still be sucked in. Even with the fully enclosed version HOT air is still prevelent problem because the filter is still closer to the engine. HOT air in the intake isn't a good thing.

3. A Cold Air Intake (CAI) will have to be custom made if you want it to be a true CAI. Not hard to do, just will take some planning and the proper parts. Mandrel bent piping and a cone filter with T-Bolt clamp or Hose clamp. Shouldn't cost you much to do it either.

4. K&N they may have one for the newer s40/c30 models, but this will not fit on your vehicle. So don't even try it. BMC CDA had something, but they were around $300 and always out of stock.

so the Box Air Filter (stock filter) is better than Short Ram Intake (SRI)? even with the heatshield placed around it?

FYI the best setup is the stock airbox with a performance filter inside of it.

Yes I have the EST SRI and while it looks cool under the hood and it makes a great deep throaty sound it still gets major heatsoak in the Summer time.

 

That is what the BMC CDA looks like for a lot less. FYI it is just like a stock airbox.

anyway i finally got one, it all came out to about $50. here is the picture.

Looks good, just keep the box like that.

 

Looks ok. Your going to get MAJOR HEATSOAK though. I'd suggest removing the bottom part of the airbox and making a heatshield that excompasses the folter on each side and that has a sealer at the top like the IPD USA and EST versions.

yeah, you're going to be sucking in straight hot air. You can't buy heat shields sperately, either gotta buy the kit or make your own. It looks legit though. I would take out the bottom of the air box though, you're just hurting yourself more by blocking all of the cold air coming in from the bottom of the car.

 

Just get some sheet metal and make a shield box. something like this.

 

Something like this would be better.

 

1. You can see if EuroSportTuning will sell their heatshield seperately. The last time I knew they would but would charge $150 for it. Might as well just buy the whole kit for the little bit extra money it would cost.

2. Custom make your own to the likes of EST's and IPD USA's.
