Continental Timing belt...Is it good choice?
Hi Forum Members,
I purchased a 2000 S70 AWD with 90k. I Had my local mechanic replace the timing belt just to be safe. Ordered the replacment kit from FCP Groton with tensioner and pulley and Continental belt.
Took it in to Volvo dealership as the key started twirling and lock mechanism is toast...and the check engine light had also come on shortly after a fill up and car started hard. They said the check engine light came on because the tensionser on the timing belt had allowed the belt to slip a couple of teeth????? and that if it continues it will ruin the engine (interference engine).
I said that my mechanic just replaced the belt/pulley/tensioner and they said it was not OEM and that it was a continental belt.
My mechanic is no rookie...Does this scenario sound right??
I've had good luck with FCP Groton stuff...
Let me know what you all think.

RE: Continental Timing belt...Is it good choice?
FCP should have given you OEM stuff unless otherwise noted in the brand. It sounds like either it wasnt installed right or possibly a bad belt. I dont know if they had multiple choices on belt brand of not? Either was getting it fixed is a must.

Many thanks for the info.
The Timing belt kit I ordered from FCP Groton was the only kit they offer for the 00 S70 AWD. They list the Contienetal belt as OEM. I just had my mechanic install the same basic thing on the '97 850GLT turbo before I sold it to my nephew, who has had no problems.
I did send an e-mail to FCP about the situation. They are great to work with. I defintely will have the situation rectified.
If the timing belt is off a couple of teeth, would that trigger the check engine light????
