Default continual check engine light for gas cap

I've brought my 1998 S70 GLT into my mechanic twice so far for the check engine light. Each time my mechanic has told me that it's a loose gas cap, which I find ridiculous.

However, I have once replaced the gas cap on my car. Could it have gone bad again?

Is there anything else that can produce this error code?

I'm going to bring it back to the mechanic, but if it comes back as a gas cap I'm not paying him to read the code.

Those car I've seen a "J" shaped rubber hose on the evap canister cracked.. Causing an evap system major leak.. not to mention to check your evap purge valve for sticking or clogged by carbon build up. A Volvo system tester can be able to performe a Evap system test to see if there is an immediate leak. (Evap system = Evaporative emission recovery system in fuel system)

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to have my mechanic check. I'm off to search the forum for backup Chicago mechanics. Forgive my ignorance, but are these expensive repairs? They don't seem bad, but I want to be sure.

Hey leland, I also had tear in my "J" hose off the canistor as well. But I also had several other torn hoses in the EVAP system. I took pics and posted, I think you can type in "EVAP advice", in the search box to find the post.

if the "J" hose only it's not bad should be under $50... an evap valve runs from $40 to $60 + whatever your mechanic charge you for labour.. hope this help.

If you do the job yourself, my post with pics is on page 3 or 4 of this S70 forum. Its title is EVAP CEL advice. I took pics of all the hoses I found torn on my CEL problem. It took me a couple of hours to do the job, (of course I was hunting down the hoses, u will know whichones ahead of time) and I was able to buy all hoses and clamps at local parts store. GL

Save your money and get your own code reader. Code readers are under $100, I dont know how much your mech charges each time but it may be worth your while to buy your own as the OBD plug is really easy to get to.

Default volvo s70 engine light always on

I too have a volvo that constantly has the check engine light on. Its a '99 Volvo S70 AWD Turbo. I've spent hundreds of dollars on gas caps, sensors, even the catalytic converter was replaced. Each time it was try something else. Some work was done under a recall due to a class action law suit; however, that check engine light is still always on. We've recently moved to Brunswick Co., NC and it won't pass the inspection we need to register it. Definately will have the mentioned hoses checked. Wouldn't most mechanics check for this though?
