I have a 2000 s70 non turbo.l first noticed this problem on hot days. Car would start then die. If I turned the key to off and re started it would eventually start. Sometimes 5 times, sometimes 10. But it has always started. It would also die at some stops. Now I am having same problem just about every day, even in winter. Any ideas??

Is there a check engine light and have you scanned for any stored fault codes? Does the temperature guage act normal or does it wander? Do you have issues with cold starts vs warm starts or just any start? Have you ever serviced the ETM (electronic throttle)?

I'd consider a few areas to investigate depending on any other observations : 1) engine coolant temp sensor (measure resistance of sensor) 2) fuel pressure (pump/relay/regulator) 3) Vacuum leaks/intake air leaks (do a visual check for any loose hoses/cracks/tears but a smoke test may be in order) 4) ETM issues. Check the Xemodex web site for some content and diagnostics approach.

Another possibility is a bad camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. Whenever I encounter a no-start situation I troubleshoot this way to determine if I have a fuel delivery problem, or spark problem: The next time it dies, take a can of starting fluid and spray about a 2 second burst into the air intake and try to start the engine. If it starts right up, then dies you have a fuel delivery issue. If it does not start at all, then you likely have a spark issue.
