Default Engine code issue

I just bought a canOBD2 code reader to check out the engine light that's been shining oh so happily in the dash of my '99 S70 for about a week now, and I've received two different codes, P0455 "EVAP System Large Leak Detected" and P1081 which gives me no definition other than "Immobilizer Communication". Is this a problem that I can easily repair myself (the most I've ever done to my Volvo is change the plugs) or will i have to bring this to my mechanic? And if anybody knows more about the P1081 code, that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help

The 0455 could be a loose gas cap to a leak some where.
The 1081 I would wait and see if it comes back on.

I checked to see if it was the gas cap, cleaned out some of the crap that was in and around it, made sure it was tight, and reset the codes, the light came back on both codes were still there in just a couple minutes.

If the immoblizer wasn't working the car would not start.
For the 0455 there is an evap valve under the hood on the cooling fan. There is a hose from the intake then it runs back to the canister and tank.
The valve could be bad or one of the hoses.

Cool ok, ill look into that, and regarding the immobilizer issue, i believe that I read somewhere else, that fixing the 455 problem will also correct the 1081 issue. thanks for your help

It looks like it was the gas cap after all, after closer inspection, we found the rubber O-ring was really gooked up, so we cleaned it, reset the codes and I drove around 30 miles without the engine light popping back up. Thanks for your help again.

I just recently had a check engine light come up on me for the first time. I have not been able to check what the malfunction codes have been because I have been quite busy commuting to and from school. I dont think it is anything with the engine because the car runs well as it did before the light came on. The only things I have done to it recently for the first time is give it a full exterior wash, and use the cruise control (which worked well). I also refueled and noticed that the rubber piece that sticks out in front of the fuel entrance is very worn and actually broken in some places. I am planning to see my mechanic on Tuesday, but could I also have the same problem as weekendbiggs?

Ah, I see. In that case, I will try to clean out some of the gunk around the fuel injection area to see if the light goes off. Is there any special fluid that I must use to clean it, or will ordinary water do?

Will do. I will try that and see if that works. Either way, I will see my mechanic about my trunk release issue on tuesday.

On a side note, when I bought the car, it did not come with the owner's manual. My car has aroud 96500 miles right now. Is there a special service that should be done soon, such as at 100000 miles?

I actually had my mechanic do a used car check on the engine and such and he mentioned that the belt did not look too old, so I believe that it was changed around 70000 miles, as it should have been. I recall reading something online about the fuel lines needing replacement soon though.

I drove down to my mechanic to see if he could take a look at the issue today, and to my luck, he was closed. I wont be able to see him again until next Tuesday, so I decided to take pictures of some parts that have been concerning me a little, and that might explain the check engine light. In this picture, the hose I circled in white has some wear on it. Could that cause me a problem?

Finally, here is a picture of my fuel injection area that show noticable wear on the rubber-like seal surrounding the entrance. Only the part that portrudes out is worn though, the rest looks fine.

That will not affect the cap sealing. That parts wears out quite often. That is nothing to worry about.
Make sure the seal in the cap isn't cracking.

The cap looks fine, I dont see any kind of cracking. I'm beginning to think its some sort of sensor, or maybe the fuel filter needing a change. Either way, I hope it holds up until next Tuesday.
